Monroe fifth in final home invite

MONROE — Senior Cayson Helwig won a championship at 175 pounds to lead the Sugar River Raiders to a third-place finish and sophomore Joah Wellman earned a championship at 215 pounds as the Monroe Cheesemakers took fifth place at the Monroe Invitational Wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 24.

The tournament has been held since 1984 and this was the last tournament to be held at the present Monroe High School gym. Monroe will move into a new high school facility next school year.

Seventeen teams competed and Oconomowoc won the team championship with 265 points. Sugar River was third with 144 points. Monroe was fifth with 132.5 points. Parkview-Albany finished in 12th place with 58 points. Darlington landed in 14th place with 55.5 points. Brodhead-Juda was 16th with 46 points and Black Hawk-Warren-Shullsburg was 17th with 35.5 points.

For the championship at 106 pounds, Andreas Monrial of Oconomowoc defeated Madox Mau of Sugar River 6-2. In a third-place match at 113 pounds, freshman Kyan Lentz of Sugar River lost to Rugar Wall of Boscobel-Wauzeka-Steuben by medical forfeit. Also at 113 pounds, junior David Aguellles of Darlington won his fifth-place match over Shia Lor of Madison East with a pin in 2:38.

For third-place at 120 pounds, sophomore Thomas Lohmar of Brodhead-Juda won with a major decision 10-0 over freshman Jonathan Dillivan of Janesville Parker. At 126 pounds, junior Noah Schuh of Monroe lost in a third-place match to senior Landen Kamin of Oregon 12-7.  A fifth-place match at 132 pounds was won by freshman Konek Swenson of Sugar River 7-3 over   junior Adler Plamannn of Middleton. Sophomore Weston Huntsman of Monroe won his seventh-place match at 138 pounds over sophomore Will Sanderson of Beloit Memorial with a pin in 34 seconds.

Sophomore Oliver Ostby of Monroe lost his seventh-place match at 144 pounds against sophomore Phillip Yang of Madison East by pin in 2:22. For third place at 144, senior Nathan Johnson defeated junior Todd Hall of Brodhead-Juda with a pin in 1:00. A fifth-place match at 150 pounds saw senior Ashlin Mihlbauer of Sugar River win with a pin in 3:00 over junior Dahlton Vogel of Whitewater. Also at 150 pounds, sophomore Tavin Bomkamp of Parkview-Albany wrestled for the championship against senior Kellen Wolbert of Oconomowoc, but lost by technical fall in 2:51.

In the championship match at 157 pounds, senior Sam Zanton of Middleton went to 33-0 with a pin in 1:13 over senior Connor Eckdhal of Monroe. Another area wrestler at 157 pounds, freshman Bronko Baer of Sugar River, lost to junior Thomas Ruth of Oregon with a technical fall in 3:51. 

Two area wrestlers fell short in their matches at 165 pounds. Senior Lukas Loshaw of Sugar River lost to senior Dameon Poulton of Galena for seventh place with a pin in 3:36. For fifth place, sophomore Elijah Gunn of Parkview-Albany lost to junior Erik Hanson of Beloit Memorial by pin in 4:43. 

Four area wrestlers competed for places at 175 pounds. For first place, senior Cayson Helwig of Sugar River won the championship with a pin over junior Mohamed Elnagar of Madison East in 3:03. For third place, freshman Maximo Xolo of Darlington defeated junior Peter Roth of Parkview-Albany 11-7. Senior Kabian Ramos of Monroe wrestled for fifth place but lost to senior Pavil Jones of Middleton 11-0 (major decision).

At 190 pounds, senior David Eckerman of Black Hawk-Warren-Shullsburg lost his seventh-place match with junior Trevor Piper of Whitewater by pin in 1:15. Sophomore Patrick Harms of Monroe captured fifth place at 190 pounds with a pin in 2:22 over senior James Matusek of Oconomowoc. In the third-place match, sophomore Brady Baer of Sugar River won over senior Cam’Ron Ruff of Beloit Memorial 16-8. 

Monroe got a championship at 215 pounds as sophomore Joah Wellman won a 5-3 decision over junior Tyson Jacques of Oconomowoc. At 285 pounds, Darlington’s Kaden Drake, a junior, pinned junior Allen Strzykowski in 50 seconds to take fifth place.
