Monroe fends off Turner; Comets trump Panthers

BELOIT — The Monroe Cheesemakers stayed in front in the Rock Valley-Valley race with a 72-62 victory on Jan. 30.

Monroe’s Mekhi Brown scored 22 points, hitting 4 of 5 three-point attempts and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Jeremiah Meyer tallied 25 points, while Jordan Meyer had 13 points and Marcus Ott nine.

The Cheesemakers led 33-27 at halftime and out-scored the Trojans 39-35 in the second half. Monroe shot 55.6% from the field, including a blistering 65.6% Effective FG Percentage. MHS collectively shot 52.9% (9/17) from three. Turner shot just 39.7% from the field and hit only 5 of 20 three-point attempts.


Albany 52, Juda 40

JUDA — The Comets scored a Six Rivers East win over the Panthers on Jan. 30, jumping out to a 12-point halftime lead and maintaining the differential throughout the second half.

Ty Durtschi carried Albany on the offensive end, ending the night with 29 points, including hitting 6 of 12 three-point attempts. He also added eight rebounds off the glass, three steals, three assists and two blocks. Kaden Zurfluh added 11 points for Albany.

Jayden Brown paced Juda’s stat sheet with 20 points, eight boards and three steals. Easton Hess hit four threes for 12 points.


Williams Bay 43, Monticello 38

WILLIAMS BAY — The Ponies hung with their hosts in a nonconference road game Feb. 1, but came up a few baskets short in the end.

The teams had nearly identical field goal, three-point and free throw shooting marks, but Monticello’s 23 turnovers to William Bay’s 13 proved to be too costly.

Alex Roe led Monticello with 12 points, while Mason McCutchin finished with 11 and Hunter Grossen nine.


Monticello 51, Orangeville 45

ORANGEVILLE — The Ponies rallied in the second half to knock off the Broncos in a nonconference border battle Jan. 30. Orangeville led 28-23 at halftime, but Monticello rallied by out-scoring the Broncos 28-17 in the second half.

Alex Roe had 24 points — including making 13 of 15 free throws — to lead Monticello. Presley Ladwig added 11 points. Joe Isenberger led Orangeville with 13 points.


Cambridge 78, Brodhead 62

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals fell behind by 17 in the first half in a nonconference battle of the birds. The Blue Jays followed the lead of Oscar Brown (23 points), Matt Buckman (16 points) and Jett Horton (15 points).

Cullen Walker led Brodhead with 19 points and seven rebounds. Brody Riese had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Sam Searls hit three 3s to ended the night with 11 points.


Belleville 81, Waterloo 48

WATERLOO — The Wildcats scored 55 points in the first half en route to a Capitol South win on Jan. 30.

Jackson Scholey led the way with 21 points, while Adam Cann had 18, Samuel Arndt 12, Evan Thomas 11 and Bryce Babler 9.

In other area action, New Glarus knocked off Wisconsin Heights 71-54 on Jan. 30, then lost to Marshall 80-69 two days later. Argyle edged Pecatonica 63-59 on Jan. 30, while Barneveld rolled Black Hawk 62-20 the same day.
