Monroe falls to Edgerton; BH stifles Albany

EDGERTON — The Monroe Cheesemakers are enduring a two-game losing streak after they lost to the Edgerton Crimson Tide 74-67 in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game on Thursday, Jan. 15. Edgerton came into the game undefeated in Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division action at 6-0.

The Cheesemakers were able to maintain the lead in the first half as junior Kam Gerber-Reamer scored on a scooping layup with 8:43 left in the half for a 14-10 Cheesemaker lead. Senior Mekhi Brown drilled a three with 3:23 left in the half to give Monroe a 25-23 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the half so the Cheesemakers had a 25-23 lead at the break.

Edgerton tied it on their first possession of the second half at 25-25 and took the lead at 27-25 with a steal and a layup on their next possession with 17:18 left in the game.

The Cheesemakers re-gained the lead at 37-36 on Brown’s three-point basket with 14:00 left. They increased the lead to 39-36 on Gerber-Reamer’s layup with 13:33 remaining. Senior Payton Herbst put the Cheesemakers in front 41-36 with a pair of free throws. But, the Crimson Tide re-claimed the lead at 42-41 with a 3-pointer with 10:17 left. Edgerton opened up a 56-45 lead with 6:52 left in the game and the Cheesemakers never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

Edgerton had an advantage at the free throw line as the Crimson Tide went 12-23 while the Cheesemakers were just 4-6. Monroe also didn’t help themselves with 15 turnovers.

Brown led the Cheesemakers with 22 points. Senior Logan Taylor had 17 points and Gerber-Reamer added 11 points. Monroe (7-5, 3-2) will be back into RVC-Valley action on Tuesday, Jan. 20 when they host the Clinton Cougars.


Black Hawk 39, Albany 37

ALBANY — The Albany Comets and the Black Hawk Warriors combined to score just 32 points in the second half, but it was the Warriors who came out with a 39-38 come-from-behind win in Six Rivers Conference boys basketball on Thursday, Jan. 15. 

Albany had 24-21 lead at halftime, and held a 38-37 lead with two minutes to go. The Warriors called a timeout and drew up a play against the Comets’ zone. They play worked as junior Cole Dunlavey scored to give the Warriors a 39-38 lead. The Warriors got a stop on defense and tried to run out the clock, but turned the ball over with 30 seconds to go. The Comets worked for a final shot by junior Ty Durtschi, but the shot from beyond the arc missed and Black Hawk came away with the win.

Senior Jacob Woodruff led Black Hawk with 10 points, followed by junior Brody Argall and freshman Kaden Stauffacher who each scored seven points. Durtschi scored 16 points and sophomore Brodyn Bakken scored 13 points to lead Albany. 

Black Hawk (3-9, 2-5) hosted Pecatonica in Six Rivers conference action while Albany (5-5, 3-5) traveled to Shullsburg for a Six Rivers Conference crossover game on Tuesday, Jan. 20.


New Glarus 72, Waterloo 50

NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights used the long ball to power themselves past Waterloo on Thursday, Jan. 15.

The Knights hit 13 three-pointers in a 72-50 win over the Pirates in Capitol South conference action. Junior Nolan Julseth scored 20 points and junior Tyse Hoesly scored 13 points, including four three-pointers. Senior Grady Johnson put up 10 points and junior Bubba Weeden and senior Matt Roth  each added nine points in the win for New Glarus.

The Glarner Knights (8-4) are now tied with Cambridge for first place in the Capitol South with 2-0 records. New Glarus plays at Belleville on Tuesday, Jan. 20 in another Capitol South Conference game.


Belleville 54, Wisconsin Heights 45

MAZOMANIE — Senior Jackson Scholey led Belleville with 18 points and five assists while senior Cooper Nemec tossed in 13 points as the Belleville Wildcats claimed a 54-45 win over the Wisconsin Heights Vanguards in Capitol South Conference boys basketball on Thursday, Jan 15.


Barneveld 64, Belleville 45

BARNEVELD — The Belleville Wildcats were denied a third straight win as the Barneveld Eagles stopped the Wildcats 64-45 in nonconference boys basketball on Saturday, Jan. 17. The loss spoiled a great game by Belleville senior Jackson Scholey, who scored 28 points.

Belleville (3-9) returned to Capitol South conference action with a home game scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 20 against New Glarus.


East Troy 84, Brodhead 49

BRODHEAD — Senior Sam Searls had 19 points and junior Dylan Ross came up with 10 points, but the East Troy Trojans got a 44-19 halftime lead and ran past the Brodhead Cardinals 84-49 in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game on Thursday, Jan 15.

The Cardinals knocked down seven three-pointers with Searls connecting on three of them. 

Brodhead (0-11, 0-6 RVC-Rock) travels to Jefferson to face the Eagles in another Rock Valley Conference crossover game on Tuesday, Jan. 20.


Pecatonica 61, Monticello 24

MONTICELLO — Junior Brock Erickson scored 15 points, junior Griffin Noll tallied 14 points and junior Luke Leonard contributed 12 points as the Pecatonica Vikings pounded the Monticello Ponies 61-24 in Six Rivers Conference boys basketball on Thursday, Jan. 15.

The Vikings allowed the Ponies to score only 17 points in the first half and slammed the door on the Ponies with only seven points allowed in the second half. Junior Hunter Grossen led Monticello with 13 points.

Pecatonica (8-4, 4-3) traveled to Black Hawk to face the Warriors while Monticello (0-10, 0-6) traveled to Argyle to meet the Orioles on Tuesday, Jan. 20 in Six Rivers Conference action.


Darlington 66, Boscobel 40

BOSCOBEL — Sophomore Ryder Fitzsimons led a productive Darlington offense with 15 points and senior Broker Buschor had a great all-around game with 14 points and four assists in the Redbirds’ 66-40 win over the Boscobel Bulldogs in SWAL Conference boys basketball on Thursday, Jan. 15. 

Senior Grady O’Brien grabbed nine of the Redbirds’ 46 rebounds as Darlington remained undefeated in the SWAL with their sixth straight win.

Darlington (9-2, 4-0) had a SWAL game scheduled at home against Southwestern on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

In other boys basketball from Thursday, Jan. 15, Barneveld defeated Argyle 67-40, while Benton toppled Juda 58-30.
