WATERTOWN — The Cheesemakers let a 4-run lead slip away and lost in extra innings, 12-11 on June 1.
After falling behind 3-1, Monroe scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to go ahead 7-3. Watertown then scored three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, but Monroe countered with a 3-run frame of its own in the top of the sixth.
The Goslings then scored five runs in the home half of the inning to get ahead 11-10, forcing the Cheesemakers to play from behind in the final inning of regulation. With one out, Sarah Prien walked and Alyse Maurer singled to put two runners on. Sydney Updike then sent a rocket to the right fielder, but Katie Hayes singled in Prien to send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Abby Walsh hit a leadoff double on the first pitch she saw. She advanced to third on a groundout moments later and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in a 2-1 count.
Maurer smashed two home runs — including a grand slam in the fifth — and finished the night 4-for-5 with three runs and six RBIs. Five other Cheesemakers collected a hit, including Sloane Ambrose, who doubled. Lizzie Snider had a hit and two walks, while Prien walked three times and scored three runs.
Emma Wild took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, allowing six earned runs on 15 hits and four walks in 7.2 innings of work.
Walsh was 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Lauryn Olson had three hit for Watertown, and Riley Lans had two. Monroe had four errors.
Brodhead 16, Clinton 5
BRODHEAD — The Cardinals opened the week newly ranked in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association poll, and continued on that success by toppling Clinton via mercy rule in the sixth inning of their game June 1.
Brodhead, ranked seventh in Division 3, scored three runs in the first, four in the second and six in the third to go up 13-0. Clinton made it 13-5 through four innings, so a 3-run homer by Taetum Hoesly in the bottom of the sixth ended the game with one out on the board. Hoesly and McKenna Young each had two home runs for Brodhead, while teammate Sophia Leitzen had another. Daisy Nelson tripled for the Cardinals as well.
Leitzen and Hoesly also had four hits apiece, with Hoesly driving in five runners. Young had two hits and two walks with five RBIs. Bailey Matthys was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Emaleigh McNeece scored three times.
Young opened the game on the mound, striking out seven and allowing two walks, three hits and two earned runs in four innings. Leitzen allowed a single earned run in two innings of work with three strikeouts, two hits and a walk.
Argyle 11, Pecatonica 11
Argyle 14, River Ridge 0
PATCH GROVE — Argyle beat conference rival Pecatonica June 1, then blew out River Ridge in a Six Rivers crossover game the next night.
Tori Lantz launched a solo home run against Pecatonica, and Megan Larson was 2-for-3 with a double and five RBIs for the Orioles. Grace Ganshert and Maggie Godfrey also doubled, with Godfrey ended the night with two hits, a walk and four RBIs.
On the mound, Ganshert struck out 12 and scattered two hits in five innings and just 63 pitches.
Chloe Schraepfer took the loss for Pecatonica, allowing 11 earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. Lexi McSherry tossed the final 2.1 innings for the Vikings. Lily Busser and Kyra Chrostowski had Pec’s only hits, with Chrostowski’s a double.
Argyle scored five runs in each of the first two innings to go ahead 10-0. Lantz then sent a fly ball over the left field fence in the third for the game’s final run.
In the River Ridge game, Ganshert hit two doubles, while Lindsay Conners had a triple and three RBIs. Lantz and Hannah Gierhart each had two hits for the Orioles.
Ganshert allowed just one hit in the game while striking out 12 on another 63 pitches.
Argyle opened the contest with a 7-run first inning. The Orioles then scored one run in the second and added six more in the top of the fourth inning.
Juda-Albany 19, Monticello-New Glarus 1
MONTICELLO — The Panthers rattled off 23 hits in the contest and scored 13 times in the fourth inning alone in a June 1 throttling of Monticello-New Glarus.
Juda-Albany, ranked third in the state in Division 4 but a four-seed in the WIAA regional bracket, opened the scoring in the top of the third inning by scoring four runs. In the next trip to the plate, the bats went wild. J/A added two more runs in the top of the fifth for good measure.
Monticello-New Glarus scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Brianna Dahl was 5-for-5 for J/A. Alana Durtschi, Avery Briggs and Gracie Freitag all had three hits, while Katie Nusbaum finished the day with four hits. Freitag doubled twice. Briggs struck out five and allowed four hits in five innings of work on the mound.
Harley Disch took the loss for MNG. McKenna Pfeuti doubled and scored.
Mineral Point 16, Darlington 4
Mineral Point 11, Darlington 1
DARLINGTON — The Redbirds were swept in a doubleheader June 2 at Sieg Field by Mineral Point.
In Game 1, Mineral Point led 4-2 after the first inning and 8-4 through four. Back-to-back 4-run innings in the fifth and sixth ended the game early.
Greta Volkening and Laura Sturtz each had two hits for Darlington. Sophie Wiegel was tagged for 12 earned runs in 5.2 innings of work on 12 hits and five walks. Mila Gille tossed the other 1/3 of an inning.
In Game 2, Mineral Point scored seven runs in the first, three in the second and another in the third.
Volkening had two of Darlington’s five hits. Just three of the 11 runs against Wiegel were earned.
Southwestern 17, Darlington 2
DARLINGTON — The Redbirds were blown out by the Wildcats June 1.
Southwestern scored eight runs in the top of the first and never looked back. By the end of the third inning, Darlington trailed 15-1.
Josie Thomas gave up 10 earned runs on 14 hits and two walks in three innings of work. Sophie Wiegel allowed seven runs on six hits a walk in two innings. The Redbirds had just three hits in the contest.
