Monroe dumps Edgewood, stays on top in Badger South

MONROE — The Cheesemakers have seen a fair amount of early success this season, but toppling conference rival Edgewood at home is another reason to celebrate. On Jan. 2, Monroe (7-1, 5-0 Badger South) went into halftime ahead by just a bucket at 23-21 before outscoring the Crusaders by six in the second half to win 60-52.

Cade Meyer and Carson Leuzinger each scored 14 points for the Cheesemakers, while JT Seagreaves had 11. Meyer leads the Badger South in scoring at 21.4 points per game, with Leuzinger fourth at 16.3.

Edgewood (3-6, 2-3) had three players in double figures: Ben Newton (12), Michael Regnier (10) and Isandro Jimenez (10).

The Cheesemakers have a trio of nonconference games coming up before closing out the first half of the Badger slate. Monroe was to host Lakeside Lutheran (6-3) Jan. 7, then joins the MHS girls team in the rekindled Snack Bowl doubleheader against the Pretzels in Freeport Jan. 11. On Jan. 14, Monroe hosts Elkhorn (6-2). Badger South play resumes Jan. 16-17 with a road game at Milton (4-5, 2-3) and a home game against Watertown (5-4, 3-2).


New Glarus 62, Platteville 39

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights scored a nonconference win Jan. 3 against the Hillmen.

Mason Martinson led all scorers with 17 points to lead New Glarus. Teammate Nathan Streiff had 16 points and Garrett James added 15.

The Knights (3-4) led 32-23 at halftime but outscored Platteville (1-8) 30-16 in the second half.


Pecatonica 41, Juda 38, OT

JUDA — The Panthers took the Vikings into overtime, but it wasn’t enough.

Avery Sheaffler led Juda with 14 points, while Trent Anderson had eight and Payton Johnson finished with seven.

Pecatonica led 16-14 at halftime.


Barneveld 62, Black Hawk 55

BARNEVELD — The Warriors received a superb effort from Jaylen Rufenacht, but in the end the Eagles were just too much during their Six Rivers East clash Jan. 3.

Rufenacht scored 30 points on 11 field goals and six free throws. He also hit two 3-pointers. Clayton Stietz added nine for Black Hawk (2-6, 2-1 Six Rivers East).

Barneveld (3-5, 3-1) was led by Seth Sullivan, who scored 22 points.


Darlington 73, Dodgeville 48

DODGEVILLE — The Redbirds turned the game around in the second half to improve to 9-0 on the young season.

Carter Lancaster scored 24 points, while Cayden Rankin and Curtis Stone each had 17 for Darlington.

The Redbirds tailed 28-27 at halftime.

In other area scores, Argyle defeated Albany 47-25 Jan. 3, the same day that Darlington rolled Dodgeville 73-48.
