Monroe co-op wins Beloit tourney

BELOIT — The Monroe co-op boys hockey team were the champions of the Beloit Tournament held over Thanksgiving weekend.

Monroe upended Beloit Memorial 6-3 in the championship Nov. 30, a day after toppling Greendale by the same score. 

Payton Stauffacher had a hat trick and two assists in the victory, while Cade Janecke had a goal and three assists.

Luke Kuberski opened the game with an unassisted goal just over a minute into the contest. Memorial tied it less than four minutes later, but Stauffacher gave the Cheesemakers a 2-1 lead just 103 seconds after that.

Hayden Roth scored off a pass from Janecke at the 13:45 mark in the first, and Stauffacher made it 4-1 less than a minute later, again off a pass from Janecke. Memorial added a goal 61 seconds later. 

Janecke scored with assists from Roth and Stauffacher in the second period. Memorial made it 5-3 in the third, but Stauffacher completed the hat trick off an assist from Janecke with less than six minutes to play.

Heath Bear made 18 saves in the game for Monroe, which outshot Memorial 38-21.

“The boys played very well,” Monroe coach Barry Einbeck said.

In the 6-3 semifinal win over Greendale Nov. 29, the Cheesemakers fell behind 1-0 midway through the first period before Hayden Roth scored on a power play with less than a minute left in the frame.

Greendale re-took the lead early in the second, but Stauffacher and Cooper Dreyfus put Monroe ahead 3-2 with back-to-back quick strike goals late in the period. Bryce Montgomery, Roth and Janecke each had assists.

Roth made it 4-2 just 1:26 into the third off assists from Stauffacher and Ty O’Connor. Stauffacher added to the lead off a pass from Janecke with under three minutes to play. Greendale scored with just 39 seconds left to make it 5-3, but then Dreyfus added his second goal of the game with just 12 seconds left in regulation off a pass from Stauffacher.

Bear had 20 saves in the contest as Monroe outshot Greendale 57-23.
