WHITEWATER — The Monroe boys and girls cross country teams looked every bit the part of top cross country programs in the state by taking first place in the Rock Valley conference meet at UW-Whitewater on Thursday, Oct. 16.
The Cheesemaker boys placed seven runners in the top 20 on their way to 27 points and first place to win the conference title. Senior Tre Dammen topped all runners with a time of 16:24.0. Sophomore Weston Huntsman placed third in 17:40.7. Freshman Ace Rossing was fourth in 17:51.8. The “Hounds” loaded the front of the pack with Brady Keehn (9th, 18:20.6), Eli Phillips (10th, 18:24.8), Kamrin Gerber-Reamer (11th, 18:38.1) and junior Lukas Gerber (20th, 19:02.0).
The Brodhead-Juda Cardinals finished third with 120 points. The Cardinals were paced by senior Mavrik Plummer, who finished fifth in 18:01.00. The Cardinals also got a big surge from senior Gauge Smith (30th, 19:36.1), junior Treyton Leutenegger (31st, 19:39.3), and freshman Ashton Henze (33rd, 19:41.6). Freshman Jameson Lenthe placed 41st with a time of 20:03.0.
The Cheesemaker girls also ruled the girls race with 23 points. The Cheese had seven runners in the Top 12, paced by senior Aniyah Jackson-Bey who came in second in 20:31.9. Sophomore Vicki Wolf was third in 20:38.9. Monroe runners then took over the meet as the Cheesemakers took fifth through eighth place. It started with freshman Braylin Cleary (5th, 21:02.5), senior Mary McKenzie (6th, 21:05.6), junior Lyla Ritschard (7th, 21:16.5), and sophomore Kaylen Cassidy (8th, 21:16.8). Freshman Elizabeth Veeder concluded the scoring for the Cheesemakers by placing 12th with a time of 22:15.7.
The Brodhead-Juda Cardinals girls team had six runners place in the top 32 with sophomore Oliva Brooks finishing in fouth place and crossing the finish line in 20:53.6. Sophomore Isabelle Yoshida placed 14th in 22:28.5. Giving the Cardinals more scoring depth were junior Ciarra Condon (23rd, 23:22.8), sophomore Rachel Hatter (28th, 23:37.6), sophomore Ryleigh Brown (29th, 23:45.8), and sophomore Tarryn Condon (32nd, 24:05.3).
Monroe and Brodhead-Juda will compete in the WIAA Division 2 sectional at Cambridge on Friday, Oct. 24.
SWAL Conference Meet
CUBA CITY — The Darlington girls cross country team won the SWAL Conference cross country meet with 32 points at Cole Acres golf course at Cuba City on Thursday, Oct. 16.
In the girls race, Darlington senior Adalee Berget finished in first place with a time of 19:07.0. Junior Brianna Vazquez was sixth in 20:17.8. Freshman Alaina McGowan finished eighth in 20:35.3. The Redbirds went back-to-back with senior Clara Solverson (10th, 20:46.4) and Madison Welacha (11th, 20:56.7). Junior Austia Stauffacher placed 14th and ran the course in 21:26.1. Argyle-Pecatonica came in seventh place and was led by freshman Emma Johnsen who came in 19th place in 22:06.0. Albany’s Emerson Butts, a freshman, finished the race in fifth place with a time of 20:12.6.
The Albany Comets had a fourth place finish in the boys race with 106 points. Argyle-Pecatonica finished the day in fifth place with 108 points. Darlington was sixth with 149 points. Senior Kaleb Broughton was the top runner for Albany with a fourth place finish in 17:33.4. Sophomore Kamden Broughton was 21st with a time of 18:49.4. Sophomore Brooks Wachholz was next for the Comets, in 22nd place in 19:00.3.
Junior Marcus Kendall led all Darlington runners by placing fifth in 17:41.4. Sophomore Ayden Slater led Argyle-Pecatonica runners with an 11th place finish in 18:24.6.
Albany will be hosting a Division 3 sectional on Saturday, Oct. 25, which will include Belleville. Darlington and Argyle-Pecatonica will compete at Prairie du Chien on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Capitol Conference Meet
CAMBRIDGE — The New Glarus-Monticello girls cross country team finished fourth at the Capitol Conference North race Oct. 17 at Cam-Rock Park, while the boys were fifth. Belleville boys and girls were each fifth in the South race.
Poynette won both the boys and girls South races. Waupun was the North boys team champion, while Lakeside Lutheran took the top spot in the girls race.
Individually, Molly Olson earned first-team all-conference honors with a fourth place finish (20:09.0). Second-team all-conference honors went to Lucy Sidwell (21:20.0). Also scoring for NGM in the North race was Mirielle Smith (24th, 22:43.3), Hadley Ness (27th, 23:25.8) and Mya Clark (29th, 24:07.4).
On the boys side, Dylan Gardner (7th, 17:42.9) earned first-team all-conference honors. Second-team all-conference honors went Benjamin Biank (13th, 18:21.5). Also scoring for NGM were Eddie Blumer (22nd, 19:08.7), Joren Salas (30th, 19:44.2) and Jack Umhoefer (33rd, 19:53.8).
In the South girls race, Belleville’s Olivia Fox came in 10th (22:11.4). The Wildcats then had five runners packed between 24th and 29th place: Ellie Gehin (24th, 24:53.9), Charlotte Weber (25th, 25:06.5), Leyna Westphal (26th, 25:31.6), Evie Vesperman (28th, 25:57.6) and Cora Funseth (29th, 26:02.8).
In the boys race, Carson Biermeier was seventh overall with a time of 17:42.2. Also scoring for Belleville were Henry Koch (23rd, 19:32.5), Jackson Scholey (25th, 19:41.0), Nolan Hisel (28th, 20:08.6) and Adrian Scott (20:14.8).
