MINERAL POINT — Three Monroe wrestlers competed in the girls individual wrestling sectional at Mineral Point on Friday, February 20 and all three girls earned a trip to the state tournament to be held beginning Thursday, February 26 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
At 126 pounds, freshman Evelyn Eckdhal won her first-place match over sophomore Makenzie Schulte of River Valley with a pin in 2:40. Evelyn Eckdhal improved to 47-5 with the win.
The Cheesemakers advanced junior Althea Eckdhal at 145 pounds as she defeated sophomore Brooklyn Hanke of Lancaster with a pin in just 13 seconds to win her first-place match. Althea Eckdhal’s record is now 49-2.
Freshman Addi Treuthardt was able to wrestleback at 152 pounds after losing in the semifinals, and won her second-place match over senior Sophia Burr of Lancaster with a pin in 1:34 to qualify for the state tournament. Treuthardt is now 45-6 on the season.
Also qualifying for the State Tournament is senior Nora Christensen of Sugar River at 235 pounds. Christiansen improved to 11-1 by winning her second-place match over freshman Lillian Heisner of Mineral Point. In the championship match at 235 pounds, Christiansen lost to senior Ellie Lenzendorf of Waunakee by a pin in 52 seconds.
Just missing out on a trip to state were sophomore Olivia Brooks of Brodhead-Juda at 138 pounds and Kaylee Russell of Darlington at 145 pounds. Brooks wrestled for second place but lost to freshman Olivia Soumphonphakdy of Oregon by pin in 1:15. Russell competed in a second-place match but lost to Brooklyn Hanke of Lancaster with a pin in 12 seconds. Hanke then lost to Althea Eckdhal of Monroe with a pin in 13 seconds.
The Girls State Wrestling Tournament will begin at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 with the finals beginning with the March of Champions at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28.
DHS, Pec-Argyle fall short in team sectional
MINERAL POINT — Two area teams competed in the WIAA Division 3 Team Sectional wrestling tournament at Mineral Point on Saturday, Feb. 21.
The Darlington Redbirds faced the Clinton Cougars in the quarterfinals and Pecatonica-Argyle met Pardeeville in another quarterfinal.
Against Clinton, Darlington got forfeits for freshmen Maximo Xolo at 175 pounds and junior Calum Crist at 190 pounds. Junior Gage Ruf won his match at 215 pounds over sophomore Ethan Taylor of Clinton with a pin in 1:55. But the Cougars defeated the Redbirds 48-24.
Pecatonica-Argyle won their quarterfinal over Pardeeville 54-22 as freshman Layton Gruenenfelder, at 126 pounds, freshman Charlie Krebs (120 pounds) and senior Lukas Orloff (132 pounds) picked up forfeits while freshman Daniel Henderson won his match at 175 pounds with a pin in 3:39 over freshman Erich McManis and freshman Ethan Ubersox (215 pounds) defeated freshman Brock Huset by getting a fall in 2:36.
Pecatonica-Argyle then wrestled against Markesan in the semifinals while Mineral Point faced Clinton. Pecatonica-Argyle was led by Lukas Orloff wrestling at 138 pounds where he won his match over Caden Ruetten of Markesan with a fall in 1:46. At 113 pounds, Gruenenfelder beat freshman Ryker Dornfeld with a technical fall in 2:00. In a 190 pound match, freshman Simon Paust of Pecatonica-Argyle scored a win over freshman Preston Lang of Markesan with a pin in 41 seconds. Despite those wins, the Vikings lost to the Hornets, 46-32. In the other semifinal, Mineral Point clobbered Clinton, 65-12.
Mineral Point defeated Markesan 46-36 in the Team Sectional Championship and will compete at Team State on Saturday, March 4.
