MONTICELLO — While the season is still young, the Monticello-New Glarus softball team has plenty to be excited about. In the home opener on April 4, the Ponies mercy-ruled rival Belleville 11-0 in a non-conference game.
Not only did the game end in five innings, but freshman pitcher Heidi Olson tossed a no-hitter — and finished one batter away from a perfect game. A one-out walk in the second inning to Story Fossum was Belleville’s only baserunner in the contest. Olson struck out 10 of the 16 batters she faced.
On the flip side, Heidi Olson was 2-for-3 with two runs from the two-hole. Sister Molly Olson, batting leadoff, walked three times, stole two bases and scored three runs.
Three-hitter Dalana Trumpy, who recently announced her intent to play at Madison College next spring, walked and scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run. Trumpy was also recently named the Triple Threat Athlete of the Week on WisSports.net.
Rayna Vogel was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI, steal and run. Eliza Legris, Karlee Wilkins and Sadie Wilkins also each scored a run.
For Belleville, Bryn Prochaska took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, allowing 11 runs (5 earned) with eight walks, four strikes and three hits allowed in four innings of work. The Wildcats defense committed four errors.
MNG jumped on Prochaska immediately in the first inning and batted around the order. The first four hitters all reached safely on three walks and a single. It was 5-0 by the time Belleville recorded the second and third outs, which came against the 8-9 hitters.
In the second inning, the Ponies scored two unearned runs on an error at first base off the bat of Malorie Miller.
MNG scored four more unearned runs in the bottom of the third thanks to some sneaky baserunning.
Up next for the Ponies is back-to-back away games against Benton-Shullsburg and Highland on April 7 and 8. On April 10, MNG hosts Belmont, with a Darlington triangular slated for April 12.
Belleville hosts Waterloo on April 8, followed by a nonconference game against Madison La Follette-East on April 11.
