MNG fifth at Badger meet; sectionals next

STOUGHTON — The Monroe-New Glarus swim team finished fifth as a team at the Badger South Conference meet Nov. 2 at Stoughton High School.

The Cheesemakers ended up with 219 points. Edgewood (522) was the conference champion, followed by McFarland (406), Milton (290.5) and Stoughton (253). Oregon (196.5) edged Monona Grove (196) for sixth place, with Fort Atkinson (54) and Watertown (30) finishing eighth and ninth.

Monroe-New Glarus had no individual conference champions either. Edgewood won seven of the 11 races, with Milton swimmers taking the four other race titles.

The Cheesemakers had two fourth-place finishes. The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore’s Morgan Erstad and Alyssa Roelli and juniors Mekenzie Hammer and Francesca Schiro finished with a time of 1:55.68, less than seven seconds behind champion Edgewood. 

Hammer had the other fourth-place finish, which came in the 100-yard butterfly. Hammer’s time of 1:01.93 was less than a second behind third place, but more than four and half seconds behind champion Danielle Cramer of Milton. Cramer also won the 100-backstroke (57.30) by 6/100ths of a second. 

In the 100-free, Schiro was fifth (55.89). Karley Michels was fifth in the 100-breaststroke (1:13.21), two spots ahead of teammate Anna Newcomer (1:14.24). Erstad was fifth in the 500-free (5:39.17). The 400-free relay team made up of Erstad, Hammer, Schiro and Kendra Wenger gave Monroe-New Glarus another fifth-place finish. Erstad was sixth in the 100-back (1:03.29). 

The Cheesemakers enter its final week in the pool before the WIAA Division 2 sectional meet, which is slated for 1 p.m. Nov. 12 at Baraboo. Those that advance to the state meet will swim Nov. 18 at the UW-Natatorium in Madison.
