WATERTOWN — The Monticello-New Glarus softball team saw its season come to a close with a tight 3-1 loss to Watertown Luther Prep in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal game May 19.
Luther Prep advanced to play top-seeded Brodhead, with the game scheduled for May 24.
In Division 5, Black Hawk lost to Waukeza-Steuben 12-0 in five innings. Wauzeka-Steuben will play at No. 2-seed Argyle May 24.
Seneca 1, Argyle 0, 11 innings
SENECA — In the regular season final May 19, the Orioles dropped what could become a potential postseason marquee game. After 21 scoreless half innings, Seneca scored an unearned run off Grace Ganshert in the bottom of the 11th to grab the victory.
Ganshert struck out the first batter of the inning — her 26th punchout of the afternoon. Back-to-back singles put runners on first and second, and an error on a bunt loaded the bases before a single ended it two pitches later. Ganshert scattered six hits and did not walk a batter in 10.1 innings.
At the plate, Ganshert had three hits, while Hannah Gierhart walked and was hit by two pitches. Jenny Helfvogt had a hit and was beaned, and Mya McNett and Chesney Leigh each reached on a single and a walk.
Brodhead 6, Edgerton 1
BRODHEAD — The Cardinals capped the regular season with a statement win over the Tiders May 19.
Just a week earlier, Edgerton won a nail-biter over Brodhead 3-0. This time around it was a different story.
Brodhead’s McKenna Young tossed a complete game, allowing a single earned run on two hits and a walk. She struck out 16. At the plate, Young was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Taetum Young also had two hits, including a triple, and Dairy Nelson was 2-for-3 with a double. Alexis Kammerer and Jaelyn Hilliard each had two singles. Hilliard also walked and scored twice, while Kammerer drove in two runners.
Platteville 1, Pecatonica 0
PLATTEVILLE — The Vikings closed the regular season with a nonconference loss in a pitcher’s duel May 20.
Trinity Gruenenfelder and Tessa Green has Pecatonica’s lone hits. On the mound, Chloe Schraepfer struck out five while allowing just three hits and a walk.
The game’s only run came in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly.
