MONROE — The Cheesemakers lost to Milton 5-2 on May 13, but saw some of the best performances thus far this season from some of its competitors.
At No. 1 singles, Monroe’s Chris Andraski controlled Peter Emerson throughout, winning 6-1, 6-1.
“Chris played his best match of the season and was very consistent throughout,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. “I loved his control and for him to get a win at No. 1 singles was a nice boost for his confidence moving forward. He played smart and really mixed up his shots well.”
Monroe’s other win came at No. 2 singles, where freshman Ryan Mathiason went the distance to oust Colton Conway, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
“Ryan Mathiason played a long No. 2 singles match and showed great composure throughout. He had a solid first set and his opponent started to settle in with the second set and really hit some nice forehands,” Bordner said. “For Ryan to respond and come out with a strong third set as a freshman was really impressive. His mental focus is great and I think this match will be a nice confidence booster for him moving forward. His serve is coming along and he’s getting more comfortable with playing more offensively.”
In the top doubles flight, Charlie Frehner and Aaron Roidt lost 6-3, 6-3, but gave their Milton counterparts some fits.
“(They) faced another really great squad,” Bordner said of Roidt and Frehner. “I love the energy that Charlie and Aaron bring every match. They really get after it and it’s a blast to watch them. They’re still working on a lot of little things right now, as Charlie is just in his second year of tennis and Aaron in his first year of competing. I think if we can get them playing at their best at the end of season, we might be able to make a little push in postseason play with these two.”
Elsewhere for Monroe, No. 3 singles James Seagreaves lost 6-2, 6-0; No. 4 singles Miguel Aragon fell 6-1, 6-2; No. 2 doubles of Ethan Towne and Chris Giasson dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match; and the No. 3 doubles tandem of Mitch Ferguson and Gavin Eckerman lost 6-0, 6-2.
“I think the rest of our team was just outmatched,” Bordner said.
