MHS season ends at subsectionals

MADISON — The Monroe Cheesemaker girls’ tennis team closed the 2022-23 season at the Madison Memorial Subsectional on Monday, Oct. 3.

The Cheesemakers were unable to score any team points, as Madison West and Middleton totaled 22 as the top teams.

No. 1 singles Krissi Haumer edged Hannah Kallungi from Portage 6-4, 6-4 before falling to the No. 1-seeded Naisha Nagpal from Verona. Nagpal didn’t give up a single game, as she won 6-0, 6-0. In the La Crosse sectional on Wednesday, Oct. 5, Nagpal took section to advance to the state tournament Oct. 13-15.

Monroe’s Lindsay Leuzinger also faced the top seed in the No. 2 singles bracket. After defeating Thea Laffin from Portage 6-3, 6-2, Leuzinger faced off against Sonya Agapov from Middleton. As the No. 1 seed, Agapov won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. 

Kate Kundert began her tournament at No. 3 singles against Greta Becker from Madison West. Kundert improved in the second set, able to grab two games, but fell 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 4 singles, Taylor Jacobson dominated Portage’s Emma Hoppmann 6-0, 6-0 to move on to the second round. Jacobson, too, faced stiff competition in Sophie Shi of Middleton. The No. 1-seeded Shi moved on with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

As the No. 7 seed, No. 1 doubles pair Sydnee Conway and Allison Wunschel faced off against No. 2 seeded Ashley Andler and Amy Li of Middleton. Despite losing in straight sets, Conway and Wunschel managed to grab three games in the second set. The final score was 6-0, 6-3.

No. 2 doubles duo Morgan Johnson and Grace Versnik fared slightly better in their bracket, falling 6-1, 6-2 to Isabelle Gao and Emily Goetz of Madison West.

In their play-in round, Elly Beckman and Brooke Hanson defeated Portage’s No. 3 doubles team Valeria Weise-Diez and Jackie Jamison 6-2, 6-0. In round two, the Cheesemaker pair ran into No. 1-seeded Mihika Shivakumar and Emily Cai of Madison Memorial. Beckman and Hanson fell 6-1, 6-0.
