The Monroe Cheesemakers traveled to Walworth to face the Big Foot Chiefs in a Rock Valley conference crossover game on Thursday Jan. 22. Unfortunately for the Lady Cheesemakers, the Chiefs handed the Cheesemakers a 48-28 loss.
Junior Braylee Friedrich led Monroe with nine points. Sophomore Brynlee Scace scored eight points, and sophomore Analise Newcomer had six points. The loss continued a trend that has been consistent all season for the Cheese. When the Cheesemakers score 35 or more points, they are 5-4. When the Cheesemakers score less than 35 points, they are 0-6.
Monroe (6-10, 1-7) had a nonconference game scheduled at Lake Mills on Saturday Jan. 24.
Lake Mills 45, Monroe 28
LAKE MILLS — The Lake Mills L-Cats started out hot and stayed hot to defeat the Monroe Cheesemakers 45-28 in nonconference girls basketball on Saturday, Jan. 24.
It was the second straight loss for Monroe and the second straight game in which the Cheesemakers produced only 28 points. Senior Alexis Gertsch led the Cheese with seven points. Sophomores Brynlee Scace and Analise Newcomer each scored five points for the Cheesemakers.
Monroe (6-11, 1-7 Rock Valley-Valley) had Turner on their schedule for a Rock Valley Conference crossover game on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Cuba City 50, Darlington 42
CUBA CITY — The Darlington Redbirds had their 11-game winning streak stopped by the Cuba City Cubans 50-42 in a SWAL conference game on Thursday Jan. 22.
The streak began on Dec. 11 with a 58-50 win over Fennimore after the Redbirds began the season 0-3.
Senior Maddie Gratz led the Redbirds with 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Catie Harwig scored nine points in the loss for the Redbirds.
Darlington (11-4, 6-2) fell one game behind Cuba City for first place in the SWAL. Darlington was scheduled to host Fennimore on Tuesday Jan. 27 in SWAL conference action.
Brodhead 74, Whitewater 34
BRODHEAD — The Brodhead Cardinals took a 25-point halftime lead and soared past the Whitewater Whippets 74-34 in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Senior Alecia Dahl was the top scorer for Brodhead with 28 points and senior Gretchen Kammerer supplied some additional offense with 12 points. Junior Chesney Walker added nine points. The Cardinals won their fourth straight game in which their average margin of victory has been 32.5 points per game.
Brodhead (14-2, 7-2 Rock Valley-Rock) was scheduled to play a nonconference game at Marshall on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
New Glarus 53, Marshall 41
MARSHALL — Junior Kalia Malaise scored 18 points to help the New Glarus Glarner Knights to a 53-41 win over the Marshall Cardinals in Capitol South Conference girls basketball on Thursday, Jan. 22. Two other players scored in double figures for the Knights. Junior Kate Parman had 12 points and junior Ellie Brenkman had 11 points in the win. New Glarus had 14 assists and 16 steals to improve to 8-8 overall.

NEW GLARUS — The Waupun Warriors took an 18-17 lead at halftime and never let the New Glarus Glarner Knight to get any closer in the second half as Waupun defeated New Glarus 45-37 in a Capitol Conference crossover game on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Juniors Kalia Malaise and Kate Parman led the Glarner Knights with eight points each. Parman also collected seven rebounds for the Knights.
New Glarus (8-9, 2-1) was scheduled to travel to Monticello to face Albany-Monticello in nonconference action on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Belleville 68, Cambridge 40
BELLEVILLE — Senior Toria Devoe knocked down five three-pointers while scoring 28 points to lead the Belleville Wildcats to a 68-40 win over the Cambridge Blue Jays in Capitol South conference girls basketball on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Senior Nikole Schultz had 12 points and senior Cora Funseth tracked down seven rebounds as the Wildcats stayed unbeaten in the Capitol South.
Belleville took a 28-21 lead at halftime and allowed the Blue Jays to score only 19 points in the second half. The coach of the Wildcats, Eric Liegel, said his team played a great all-around game. “Proud of the way the girls played. Defensively, we gave up a few more offensive rebounds than we would have liked which led to some second chance points, but I thought we did a nice job of taking away some player tendencies and making them take longer possessions then they would like. Offensively, we did a great job of valuing the ball. (We) had only four turnovers and shot 53% for the game,” remarked Liegel.
Belleville (9-6, 4-0) was scheduled for back-to-back road games this week with a Capitol Conference crossover game at Lodi on Monday Jan. 26 and a nonconference game at Prairie du Chien on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
