MADISON — Monroe capped its regular season tennis slate with the Badger Conference Tournament at Nielsen Stadium. There were 15 teams and 150 players. In each flight, the top eight were seeded with a random draw the rest of the way.

“We saw quite a few challenging matchups, but in all I think we played some of our best tennis of the season even though it wasn’t enough to pick up any wins,” said Monroe coach Matt Bordner.

At No. 1 singles, Krissi Haumer lost to Monona Grove’s Eliza Martin 6-2, 6-0. Lindsay Leuzinger fell to the No. 3 seed from Madison Edgewood, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Kate Kundert battled deep into the second set but lost to her Watertown opponent 6-2, 7-6 (2). Taylor Jacobson, at No. 4 singles, was swept 6-0, 6-0 by Waunakee’s Ryan Hoopes.

In doubles, Allison Wunschel and Sydnee Conway fell to Stoughton 6-2, 6-4. No. 2 doubles tandem of Morgan Johnson and Grace Versnik lost to Fort Atkinson/Cambridge 7-6 (5), 6-2, and No. 3 flight of Brooke Hanson and Elly Beckman fell 6-3, 6-2.

“Overall, we played 6th in our side of the Badger Conference, ahead of Portage. Between these matches in the tournament, and our conference duals during the season, I think it showed that this team is close but just needs a little bit more in order to really cement themselves as a team that can compete and win against mid-tier Division 1 teams,” Bordner said.

Monroe is set to play Oct. 3 in the WIAA Division 1 Madison Memorial Subsectional, which will take place at Nielsen Stadium. Those that advance to the Sectionals will play again Oct. 5 at La Crosse Central. The individual state tournament is scheduled for Oct. 13-15 at Nielsen Stadium.
