MHS falls to Oregon, rolls Platteville

MONROE — The Cheesemakers lost a heartbreaker to Oregon June 7, then brought out the sticks two days later in a nonconference game against Platteville.

Oregon defeated Monroe 2-1, with both runs coming in the top of the sixth inning. Monroe’s lone run came in the bottom of the third.

Maddie Leck had two hits and Karis Paulson ripped a double. Emma Wild took the loss on the mound, allowing eight hits and two walks in seven innings of work.

Against Platteville, Monroe collected 19 hits as a unit. Sydney Updike had a 4-for-5 performance, driving in two and scoring twice. Paulson was a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk, double, two runs and two RBIs. Alyse Maurer had two hits, two runs, a walk and three RBIs. Katie Hayes, Katrina Sathoff and Leck all had two hits. Sloane Ambrose had a hit and two walks.

The Cheesemakers were 19 of 30 at the plate with six walks and two more reaching on hit-by-pitches. 

Wild labored through five innings, allowing six runs on six hits and seven RBIs. 

Monroe took a 3-2 lead after the first inning, but the two teams were knotted up at 4-4 through three innings. The Cheesemakers batted around the order in the fourth, scoring eight runs in the process. Platteville scored twice in the fifth, but the Cheesemakers scored four in the bottom half of the inning, with the game ending on a bases-loaded Updike single to center, scoring Olivia Wiegel. 


Barneveld 12, Pecatonica 0

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings had a chance to play spoiler and keep Barneveld from clinching a share of the Six Rivers East Conference title June 9, but the Eagles came to play and stymied Pecatonica from the start.

Barneveld scored three runs in the top of the first, then four more in the second. By the time Pecatonica got to bat in the bottom of the third, the Vikings trailed 10-0. 

Chloe Schraepfer allowed eight runs on 12 hits and four walks with just one strikeout in four innings of work. Lexi McSherry gave up another four runs in an inning of work.

At the plate, Pecatonica collected just three hits, with two coming from Bri Peterson. Lily Busser had a hit and the team’s only walk against Nicole Fahey. Fahey and Daelynn Rhoades each doubled for Barneveld, with teammate’s Emma Gordon and RaeAnne Leister each collecting three hits.


MNG, Redbirds, Warriors lose in WIAA softball regional playoffs

Monticello-New Glarus lost 12-2 to Viroqua-Youth Initiative June 9 in the opening round of the WIAA Division 3 softball playoffs. 

Alexa Siegenthaler had two hits and drove in both runs for MNG. Jaden Zuber and Harley Disch each had a hit and scored. Zuber also walked. Megan Peterson finished the night with two hits. Disch, Siegenthaler and Peterson all doubled. 

Disch took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, allowing 12 runs (six earned) on eight hits and six walks over 3.1 innings. Zuber finished out the fourth in relief. 

MNG took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but VYI scored five in the bottom of the second, two more in the third and another five runs in the fourth inning. MNG scored one final run in the fifth, but not enough to keep the game going. 

Darlington saw its season come to an end June 9 with a 16-6 loss to Fennimore in the opening round of the WIAA Division 4 softball playoffs.

Sophie Wiegel was knocked around in 2.2 innings of work, allowing 12 runs (eight earned) on nine walks and four hits with five strikeouts. Josie Thomas pitched 1.3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits — including a home run.

Greta Volkening and Xandria Olson each had two hits for Darlington. 

Black Hawk also saw its season come to an end with a 7-4 loss to Southwestern in the D5 playoffs June 9. Southwestern will be at Argyle at 5 p.m. June 14 for the regional semifinal.
