MHS defeats Turner, DHS closes in on SWAL title

BELOIT — Outside of the opening minute of the game, the Monroe Cheesemakers never trailed and led the whole way in a 72-61 win over the Turner Trojans, 72-61 in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Senior Mekhi Brown scored 19 points and senior Logan Taylor got in on the scoring with 14 points. The Cheese also got 12 points from junior Kam Gerber-Reamer and 10 points from senior Marcus Ott.

Monroe won its fifth straight game and, on defense, held the Trojans below their scoring average of nearly 65 points per game.

Monroe (12-5, 7-2 Rock Valley-Valley) had another Rock Valley crossover game scheduled at home against Evansville on Friday, Feb. 6.


Darlington 60, Fennimore 42

FENNIMORE — The Darlington Redbirds are 9-0 in the SWAL after taking down the Fennimore Golden Eagles 60-42 on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Senior Broker Buschor led three players in double figures by scoring 16 points. Other scoring contributors were junior Zeke Zuberbuhler with 14 and senior Grady O’Brien with 12. 

The Redbirds led at halftime 33-23 and held a decisive edge in rebounding 32-21. Darlington also had 13 steals. 

Darlington is ranked sixth in the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll in Division 4.

The Redbirds (14-2, 9-0) were scheduled to face the Mineral Point Pointers in SWAL conference action on Friday, Feb. 6.


New Glarus 61, Poynette 58

NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights had a battle on their hands against the visiting Poynette Pumas in a Capitol Conference crossover game on Monday, Feb. 2. In the end, the Knights earned the “W” 61-58 in a tightly contested game.

New Glarus had a 31-29 halftime lead and the difference in the score remained in the single digits throughout the rest of the game. The Pumas stayed in the game with their three-point shooting, making 10 triples. The big difference for New Glarus was the number of baskets made inside the arc. The Glarner Knights made 20 baskets and the Pumas made just 11.

Senior Matt Roth led New Glarus with 18 points. Senior Tatem Stampfli produced 12 points, junior Bubba Weeden scored 11 points, and junior Nolan Julseth added 10 points for New Glarus.

“I was really happy with our defensive effort down the stretch,” said New Glarus head coach Travis Sysko.

New Glarus (4-0, 11-5) traveled to Mazomanie to take on the Wisconsin Heights Vanguards in a Capitol South Conference game scheduled on Friday, Feb. 6.


Pecatonica 58, Highland 53

HIGHLAND — Junior Griffin Noll scored 24 points and senior Cohlman Schlimgen came up with 11 points, including three big free throws down the stretch to give the Pecatonica Vikings a 58-53 win over the Highland Cardinals in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

The win was the sixth straight for the Vikings, who handed the Cardinals their fourth straight loss. The Vikings held a 29-26 lead at halftime, but the lead changed hands four times in the second half.

Pecatonica (13-4, 9-3 Six Rivers East) were scheduled to play another Six Rivers conference crossover game on Friday, Feb. 6 against the Shullsburg Miners.


Dodgeville 74, Brodhead 32

BRODHEAD — The Dodgeville Dodgers scorched the Brodhead Cardinals with 10 three-pointers on their way to a 74-32 win in nonconference boys basketball on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

The Cardinals couldn’t overcome a 41-10 deficit at halftime. Senior Sam Searls was the only player for the Cardinals in double figures with 12 points.

Brodhead (2-15, 0-9 Rock Valley-Rock) traveled for a Rock Valley Conference crossover game at Delavan-Darien on Friday, Feb. 6.


Belleville 62, Abundant Life 52

BELLEVILLE — Senior Jackson Scholey had another big game as he scored 34 points to lead the Belleville Wildcats past the Abundant Life Challengers 62-52 in nonconference boys basketball on Monday, Feb. 2.

Senior Isaac Patrow added 13 points and senior Hazeon Edmond had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Wildcats won at home for the first time this season.

Belleville (5-12, 2-3 Capitol South) played at Marshall in a Capitol South Conference game scheduled on Friday, Feb. 6.


Barneveld 75, Monticello 49

BARNEVELD — The Barneveld Eagles jumped out to a 36-14 halftime lead and rolled past the Monticello Ponies 75-49 on Tuesday, Feb. 2 in Six Rivers East Conference boys basketball.

The Ponies are looking for their first win since a 70-58 victory over Juda on February 4, 2025.

Junior Hunter Grossen buried six three-pointers on his way to 25 points to lead the Ponies. Junior Tanner Hilliard scored 10 points for Monticello.

Monticello (0-15, 0-11) had a Six Rivers Conference crossover game scheduled on Friday, Feb. 6 at home against River Ridge.

In other boys basketball on Tuesday, Feb. 3, Black Hawk defeated Juda 69-40 and Argyle toppled Albany 46-41.
