PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — The Monroe boys track and field team won its WIAA Division 2 regional championship May 20. It’s the fourth-straight year the Cheesemakers have won the meet.

Monroe scored 141.5 points, well clear of McFarland and Platteville, which tied for second at 128. Sugar River was seventh with 35 points.

“Overall it was a very business-like attitude. Kids went out and did what they were supposed to do,” Monroe coach Scott Mosher said. “We almost squeaked out some qualifiers by kids who we didn’t think would make it. Many of those who didn’t qualify ran personal bests, which is a great way to end a season.”

The Cheesemakers dominated in the sprints, which was key to the points title. Monroe took first, second and fourth in the 100-meter dash and scored first and fourth in the 200.

Jordan Montgomery won both races, finishing the 100 with a time of 11.27 seconds and the 200 in 22.47 seconds. Nick Bansley was second in the 100 (11.70) with Jack Garthwaite fourth (11.99). Michael Kundert was fourth in the 200 (24.25).

“It’s going to be an exciting postseason for Jordan and he took the first steps tonight,” Mosher said after the meet. “Bansley and Garthwaite joined Jordan in the 100. It’s rare to send three kids on to sectionals in one event, when only four qualify so that really shows our depth in the sprints.”

All four Cheesemaker relay teams advanced to the sectional meet, which was scheduled to take place May 23 at East Troy. The 400-meter relay team of Bansley, Montgomery, Camden Foesch and Lucas Flom won their race with a time of 44.43 seconds. Bansley, Flom, Foesch and Lukas Broitzman were fourth in the 800-relay. The Cheesemakers quartet of Dylan Fahrney, Lucas Sathoff, Jake Brower and JT Seagreaves were fourth in the 1,600-relay, and Brower, Sathoff, Gabe Witt and Alvin Buholzer were third in the 3,200.

“We sent all four relays, which is always a goal,” Mosher said. “The athletes this year really take pride in the relays and that doesn’t always happen because some would rather focus on individual events. I think it shows how strong of a team bond the kids have for this sport which often isn’t seen as a ‘team sport.’”

Fahrney was fourth in the 1,600 (4:50.35), while Kyle Legler was second in the 3,200 (10:02.96). Trevor Rodebaugh won the 110-high hurdles (15.54) by 2/100ths of a second, and finished second in the 300-hurdles (41.20) by 5/100ths of a second.

Cade Meyer won the high jump (6 feet, 1 inch), with Seagreaves (5-11) also advancing. Seagreaves also advanced in the long jump (19-08.5), taking fourth.

Sugar River’s Jjay Wenger was second in the 200 (23.60) and is the only Raider to advance to sectionals.
