NEW GLARUS — No, it wasn’t the NBA, but the game had the peaks and valleys, the drama and intensity, and the scoring of a tightly contested NBA game at New Glarus on Saturday, Jan. 3. The New Glarus Glarner Knights overcame a 21-point second half deficit to edge the Platteville Hillmen 92-91 in overtime in nonconference boys basketball.
New Glarus trailed 67-46 with 11 minutes to play. They picked up the pressure on defense which led to a total of 22 Platteville turnovers. New Glarus Senior Matt Roth tied the game at 84-84 on a basket with just 49 seconds to play in regulation. The Hillmen had their chances to win but missed two free throws with 4.8 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Junior Bubba Weeden began the extra period by getting an offensive rebound and a putback to give New Glarus an 86-84 lead. Senior Grady Johnson followed with a steal and a layup, and junior Tucker Sysko nailed a three-pointer to complete a 7-0 run to begin the overtime. With 20.1 seconds left, Roth made a key free throw to give New Glarus a 92-89 lead. Platteville was unable to get a game-tying three and time ran out to give the Knights a thrilling come-from-behind win.
Junior Nolan Julseth scored 30 points to lead the Glarner Knights and Roth tacked on 28. Weeden had 11 points and six rebounds. Junior Quinn Marty led the Knights with 10 rebounds. Myron Reuter and Grady Poppy each scored 23 points to lead the Hillmen.
New Glarus (6-2) was scheduled to play Lake Mills in a Capitol Conference crossover game on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Albany 51, Rio 41
ALBANY — The Albany Comets rode the hot hand of junior Ty Durtschi to a 51-41 win over the Rio Vikings in nonconference boys basketball on Saturday, Jan. 3.
Durtschi scored 28 points, including three three-pointers, to boost the Comets. Senior Kamron Parker scored seven points and sophomore Kamden chipped in with six points to help Albany win its third straight game. The Comets’ defense played another good game, holding an opponent to under 50 points for the fourth time this season.
Albany (4-2, 2-2 Six Rivers East) was set to return to conference action with a game at Monticello on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
