Knights roll Viroqua; D5 teams all lose

NEW GLARUS — Matt Roth picked a good time to be playing some of his best basketball. The senior scored 25 points to lead the New Glarus Glarner Knights (No. 5 seed) to a 71-47 win over the Viroqua Blackhawks (No. 12 seed) in Division 3 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, March 3.

The Knights took a 35-22 halftime lead with the help of three three-pointers each by Roth and junior Nolan Julseth.

Julseth finished with 18 points and senior Tatem Stampfli added 11 points for New Glarus (16-9). The Knights made nine three-pointers in all.

The Glarner Knights traveled to No. 4 seed Lancaster (16-9) for a regional semifinal on Friday, March 6. The winner is scheduled to take on either No. 1 seed Mineral Point or No. 8 seed Dodgeville for a regional championship on Saturday, March 7.

Rio 67, Pecatonica 66, OT

BLANCHARDVILLE — The 13th seeded Rio Vikings upset the 4th seeded Pecatonica Vikings 67-66 in overtime and brought an end to the season for Pec.

Pecatonica led 33-21 at halftime as junior Griffin Noll scored 17 points. Rio outscored Pecatonica 38-26 in the second half including a three-pointer by sophomore Charlie Homman, his only points of the game, with under 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 59-59. Pecatonica got the last possession of regulation, but a potential game-winning shot by junior Luke Leonard missed as time expired.

In overtime, Noll got a basket and two free throws. Leonard scored a basket and made one free throw.  With the scored tied at 66-66, junior Jack Becker of Rio made one of two free throws with :07 seconds left to put Rio up 67-66. Pecatonica coach Scott Noll called time out and set up a play for Griffin Noll to take the last shot. A pass to Noll was tipped away and, from near mid-court Noll recovered the ball and launched a shot near half-court. The shot nearly went in after hitting the backboard, the rim, and bounced off and Rio pulled the upset, 67-66.

Noll scored 34 points and Leonard scored 13. Seniors Cohlman Schlimgen and Austin Enloe played in their last game for Pecatonica. The Vikings closed the season 17-8.


Abundant Life Christian School 80, Monticello 40

Junior Hunter Grossen scored 12 points, but the Challengers (No. 1 seed) got a 20 point halftime lead and rolled past the Ponies (No. 16 seed) 80-40. It was the last game for the Ponies (1-24) as Albany and Monticello will form a co-op next season in boys basketball as the Albany-Monticello Space Stallions.


Johnson Creek 84, Juda 60

The Blue Jays (No. 5 seed) got their 15th win of the season by topping the Panthers (No. 12 seed) 84-60. Juda finished their season with a record of 11-14.


Randolph 46, Albany 40 OT

The 11th seeded Comets had an upset on their minds, but the Rockets (No. 6 seed) were able to pull out the win in overtime 46-40. With the loss, Albany closed the season 8-17.


Fall River 65, 

Argyle 52

The Orioles trailed by just two points at halftime at 26-24, but the seventh seeded Pirates outscored the 10th seeded Orioles 39-28 in the second half to get the win. Fall River improved to 13-12 while Argyle saw their season come to an end with a record of 10-15.


Barneveld 84, 

Black Hawk 29

The Warriors (No. 15 seed) suffered their ninth straight loss and their third loss to the Golden Eagles (No. 2 seed) this season 84-29. It was the last game for seniors Cooper Baumgartner, Jacob Woodruff, and Jackson Berget as the Warriors closed the season 5-20.
