NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights closed the first half on a 15-6 run and never trailed after that to earn a 74-58 win over the Cuba City Cubans in nonconference boys basketball on Monday, Dec. 22.
Junior Quinn Marty made a layup to tie the game at 17-17 with 6:50 left in the first half. The Knights followed that with a 3-pointer by senior Matt Roth, a field goal by junior Liam Crawford, a three-point play by junior Nolan Julseth, another three by Roth, and a putback by Julseth to take a 32-23 halftime lead.
The second half started with the Cubans pulling to within 37-36 on a basket by Carson Collins and a three by Cameryn Guler. Junior Bubba Weeden’s three-point play put the Knights ahead 40-36 with just under 13 minutes to play. Junior Tucker Sysko and senior Grady Johnson each hit 3’s to give New Glarus a six point lead at 49-43 with 8:36 to go. Weeden got into the lane and scored a basket, and Julseth drove in for a layup with 6:27 to go to boost New Glarus’ lead to 10 at 55-45. With 5:20 left, Roth scored a basket and was fouled. He missed the free throw but Weeden got the rebound and scored to give the Knights a 60-47 cushion. With under two-and-a-half minutes left, Julseth made two free throws, Roth made two free throws, and Julseth nailed a three to get the Glarner Knights a 74-58 win.
After the game, New Glarus coach Travis Sysko came away with a good feeling about the Glarner Knights’ play on offense and rebounding by Weeden. “We hit some timely shots, I don’t know if we shot it great tonight, but I thought offensive rebounds down the stretch was huge for us. We got some big second chance points and Bubba was involved in a lot of those offensive rebounds,” Sysko said.
Julseth led the Knights in scoring with 18 points. Roth had 17 points, and Weeden added 13 points. New Glarus (4-2) is scheduled to host Barneveld in nonconference action on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Potosi-Cassville 72, Pecatonica 67
POTOSI — Potosi-Cassville sent the Pecatonica Vikings to their second straight loss by downing the Vikings 72-67 in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game on Monday, Dec. 22.
The game was tied 31-31 at halftime, but the Chieftains were able to outlast the Vikings with a 41-point second half.
Junior Griffin Noll poured in 26 points to lead the Vikings. Junior Luke Leonard came up with 15 points and junior Brock Erickson added nine points for Pecatonica.
Pecatonica (5-2, 2-2 Six Rivers East) will travel to Juneau to take on Dodgeland in a nonconference game on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Albany 78, Highland 57
HIGHLAND — Albany junior Ty Durtschi scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Albany Comets to a 78-57 win over the Highland Cardinals in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game on Monday, Dec. 22.
Senior Kaleb Broughton contributed 14 points and sophomore Brodyn Bakken came up with 12 points to pace the Comets.
Albany held a 31-26 lead at halftime, then turned it up a notch with a 47-31 advantage in the second half.
Albany (3-2, 2-2 Six Rivers East) will play a nonconference game against Rio at home on Saturday, Jan. 3.
Parkview 58, Clinton 50
ORFORDVILLE — Senior Oliver Friedrich torched the Clinton Cougars for 33 points in leading the Parkview Vikings to a 58-50 win in nonconference boys basketball on Monday Dec. 22.
Senior Aiden Crane added 10 points as the Vikings won their sixth straight game following an opening night loss to Pecatonica on Nov. 25.
Parkview (6-1) will host Brodhead in a nonconference game on Monday Dec. 29.
