Juda-Albany upsets top seed; Brodhead, Pecatonica ousted

DODGEVILLE — Brodhead saw its softball season come to an end in a WIAA Division 3 regional title game June 16 at Dodgeville, 2-1. Both teams entered the game ranked in the top six in Division 3, with Dodgeville fifth and Brodhead sixth.

The Cardinals (16-3) committed five errors in the game, leading to a pair of unearned runs in the third and fourth innings. Brodhead scored its only run of the game in the top of the first. 

Brodhead collected five hits — including a double by Madisyn Kail, and had two reach on bean balls. Mckenna Young struck out eight for Brodhead, allowing just three hits and three walks in six innings of work. Annika Lord struck out 12, walked none and gave up five hits for Dodgeville (24-3).

Two days earlier, Brodhead rolled Lancaster 10-0, with Young tossing a 5-inning no-hitter. She walked two and struck out 11. At the plate, she doubled, homered, walked and drove in three runs, as did Sophia Leitzen. Alexis Kammerer was 3-for-3 with two runs, a double and an RBI, and Taetum Hoesly drove in a pair of runs.


WIAA Division 4 Regionals

Eighth-ranked Juda-Albany beat Kenosha St. Joseph June 14 in a regional semifinal, then stunned fourth-ranked Racine Lutheran 6-4 in the regional final June 16. The Panthers will travel to unranked Johnson Creek June 21 for the sectional semifinal, with the sectional championship slated for June 23 at Boscobel against either No. 6 Boscobel or unranked Iowa-Grant. 


WIAA Division 5 Regionals

Pecatonica defeated Wauzeka Steuben 9-3 in the regional semifinal June 14, but lost 6-0 to Barneveld in the regional championship June 16. Pecatonica’s Chloe Schraepfer was tagged for six earned runs with six strikeouts, three walks, two hit batters and eight Eagles hits. Barneveld’s Nicole Fahey and Daelynn Rhoades combined to strike out 11 while allowing a pair of hits and a pair of walks in seven innings. Pecatonica senior Lily Busser doubled in the first inning, with Maddie Hirsch singling in the fifth for the only other Vikings hit.
