MONROE — The Cheesemakers let a 1-0 halftime lead slip away early in the second half en route to a 2-1 loss to Reedsburg in a Badger West game April 26 at TR Holyoke Field.
The Beavers (3-2-1, 1-2 Badger West) had a couple of golden opportunities early on, but Monroe goalie Kaelyn Welch came up with multiple stops on breakaways. She even saved a penalty kick after a foul was called on a Monroe defender prior to a corner kick as players were trying to position themselves in the box.
Addison Bartholf scored the opening goal of the game for Monroe at the 23:00 mark in the first half on a booming free kick from 40 yards out. She booted the ball over the initial wall and back line, then the ball skipped across the grass to the outside of the keeper, curling into the back of the net just inside the left post.
Late in the 47th minute in the second half, Reedsburg tied it up. After a corner kick was initially denied entrance into the 6-yard box, Beavers forward Jenna Roers kicked a high-arching shot across the box and over the head of Monroe defender Hailey Stoychoff, who leapt for a header right in front of the net in the far back corner.
In the 68th minute, Reedsburg made another push deep into the box. Cassidy Klitzke sent a controlled pass to teammate Mia Gronley, who used a soft touch off her right foot to get the ball into an opening between two defenders. From there Gronley sent a left kick between two defenders and over Welch into the top left corner of the net, breaking the tie with less than 13 minutes to play.
The Cheesemakers fell to 1-6 overall on the season, and 1-2 in the Badger West. Monroe was set to host Fort Atkinson (1-5-1, 0-1-1) in a Badger crossover April 28, then the Cheesemakers were scheduled to play in the Big Foot Tournament April 30. Monroe’s next home game is set for May 2 against Mount Horeb (3-6, 2-3).
