Goode’s hat trick leads Cheesemakers win

VIROQUA — Senior Brody Goode got a hat trick and sophomore goalie Brogan Hoelscher had 30 saves to lead the Monroe Cheesemakers to a 6-1 win over the Viroqua Blackhawks in nonconference boys hockey on Saturday, Dec. 27.

After Viroqua got a first period power play goal, Goode tied it up at 1-1 with his first goal at 16:33 in the first period. 

In the second period, Goode and senior Brady Stuart assisted on senior Brody Koehn’s power play goal to put the Cheesemakers out in front 2-1 at the 1:34 mark of the period. Less than a minute later, sophomore Gibson Daly scored an unassisted goal at 2:25 giving the Cheese a 3-1 lead. 

Monroe got its third goal of the period at 4:57 when senior Tysen Folgate scored with an assist going to senior Brady Stuart to widen Monroe’s lead to 4-1.

Goode struck again in the third period at 11:06 with assists by Folgate and senior Brock Brandli to expand the Cheesemakers lead to 5-1. Goode completed the hat trick with another goal at 13:42 with assists going to Koehn and junior Beau Janecke to make the final 6-1. 

Monroe (2-6, 1-3 Badger Conference) was scheduled for back-to-back nonconference games on the road on Monday, Dec. 29 at Beloit Memorial and Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Beaver Dam.


Bluebirds pick up first two wins

VERONA — The Janesville Bluebirds finally tasted victory with two wins during a three game weekend series at the Verona Ice Arena. The Bluebirds were tasked with playing three games in three days at the Verona Culver Cub tournament. 

The Bluebirds got their first win of the season with a 6-2 victory over the Viroqua Blackhawks in nonconference action on Saturday, Dec. 27. Ava Kligora and Anna Cole each scored two goals and goalie Jessie Demarasse recorded 14 saves for the Bluebirds. Micki Andrews and Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe and Julianna Strommen of Brodhead got some playing time but did not score for the Bluebirds.

On Sunday, December 28, the Bluebirds defeated the Northland Pines Eagles in another nonconference game 4-2.

The Bluebirds winning streak was stopped at two as they lost in their third game of the tournament to Wisconsin Valley Union 3-0 on Monday, Dec. 29. The Bluebirds lost to WVU just nine days earlier, 6-0.

Janesville (2-9-1) is off until Thursday, Jan. 8 when they play the Stoughton Icebergs in Badger Conference action to begin a stretch of five straight home games.
