BRODHEAD — Senior Matt Roth pumped in 26 points to lead the New Glarus Glarners Knights to an 85-44 win over the Brodhead Cardinals in boys nonconference basketball on Friday, Dec. 5.
Junior Nolan Julseth added 11 points and senior Tatem Stampfli came up with 10 points for the Glarner Knights (2-1, 0-1). Senior Sam Searls reached double-digits with 13 points while senior Nolan Bump and junior Dylan Ross each had eight points for Brodhead (0-2, 0-1).
Roth hit a three to give the Glarner Knights a double-digit lead at 23-13 with around seven minutes to go in the first half. A layup in transition by Julseth increased the lead to 20 at 33-13 with 4:31 remaining in the first half. New Glarus led by as much as 25 at 41-16 with around two minutes left in the half. Searls made three free throws to put points on the board for the Cardinals as the half ended with New Glarus on an 18-5 run and holding a 41-19 lead.
The Knights bumped the lead up to 30 points at 60-30 with 10 minutes left as junior Bubba Weeden hit a jumper in the paint, junior Quinn Marty got a steal and a layup and senior Grady Johnson made one of two free throws. Junior Tyse Hoesly drained a three and junior Liam Crawford hit a bank shot to put the Glarner Knights’ lead at 40 in the closing minutes.
Glarner Knights coach Travis Sysko liked his team’s execution on both offense and defense creating scoring opportunities against Brodhead.
“I think a lot of it came off our defense tonight. I think we set the tone defensively. We played hard. We played physical. We didn’t give up second chance opportunities. We boxed out, one and done, and that led to some easy points,” said Sysko.
New Glarus travels to Dodgeville for a nonconference game on Tuesday, Dec. 9 while Brodhead hosts a Rock Valley Conference game against Evansville on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Argyle 63, Black Hawk 48
SOUTH WAYNE — The Argyle Orioles got off to a 20-10 lead at halftime, then held off a comeback by the Black Hawk Warriors to win 63-48 in Six Rivers Conference boys basketball on Thursday, Dec. 4.
Three players from Argyle scored in double figures as sophomore Mikey Helfvogt led all scorers with 28. Senior Deacon Kubly scored 14 points and sophomore Joe Roper contributed 11. For Black Hawk, playing in their season opener, junior Brody Argall poured in 12 points and senior Jacob Woodruff added 11 points as the Warriors got the deficit down to one point in the second half, but the Orioles got some timely baskets and free throws to hang on for the win.
Argyle (1-1, 1-0) was scheduled to host Parkview in nonconference action on Tuesday, Dec. 9 while Black Hawk (0-1) lost to Morrison, Ill. 51-43 in the Stateline Shootout on Saturday, Dec. 6.
