NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights had three players named to the Capitol South All-Conference team in girls basketball, which was announced Feb. 18.
Knights senior Jaylynn Benson made the first-team, freshman guard Lindsey Schadewalt was a second-team pick, and senior guard Shealyn Klosterman-Havens was honorable mention.
Benson is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,246 points in 83 games (15.0 ppg). She averaged 16.3 ppg this season and is a three-time first-team all-conference selection.
Schadewalt burst onto the scene, averaging 14.7 ppg in her first year in high school. Her role as sharpshooter from the outside helped the Knights to a 19-5 record. Schadewalt finished the year hitting 44 of 97 3-pointers (45.4%), which was the highest mark in the state in Division 3, and the fifth highest percentage in all divisions.
Klosterman-Havens averaged 5.3 points per game, but made her name on the court based on her stifling defense and ball handling skills at the point.
Marshall seniors Anna Lutz and Laura Nickel were unanimous first-team picks, with Lutz named the league’s player of the year for the second straight season. Both players were all-conference players all four years in high school. Lutz, who averaged 23 points per game this season, will play at UW-Milwaukee next year. Nickel, who averaged 15.6 ppg, will play at Northern Illinois. Marshall won the conference title again this season. In fact, the Cardinals have gone undefeated in conference play in all four years Lutz and Nickel have been on the team.
Also being named to the first team was Waterloo senior Skyler Powers and Cambridge junior Mayah Holzheuter, who led the league in scoring at 19.7 ppg. Belleville junior Callie Smith was a second-team pick, and junior teammate Ava Foley was honorable mention.
