NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights got their first win of the season by defeating the Shullsburg Miners 42-34 in a nonconference game on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

A three-pointer by junior Kalia Malaise, a lay-up by junior Ellie Brenkman, two free throws by Malaise, and a basket by sophomore Annabelle Curl got the Knights off to a 9-1 lead in the first eight minutes of the game.

McKinley Russell of Shullsburg got a steal and a layup and made one of two free throws to get the Miners to within 11-6 with 7:41 left in the first half. Another three-pointer by Malaise and a three by junior Marie Besley put the Glarner Knights in front 17-9 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.

Russell got an upside-down three point play by making one of two free throws, then scored a basket after rebounding her own miss to get Shullsburg within five points at 17-12. But, Brenkman closed the half with a 10-foot jumper followed by a steal and a layup to give the Glarner Knights a 21-12 halftime lead.

Early in the second half, Brenkman scored on a breakaway layup and Curl grabbed an airball and scored weakside to push the New Glarus lead to 27-18 with 12:20 left. New Glarus got their biggest lead at 36-24 after Brenkman made one of two free throws and scored a basket with under four minutes left.

The Miners refused to go away as senior Adeline Woodworth drained the second of her two three-pointers with 3:35 left to make it 36-27. The Knights were able to hold off the Miners down the stretch as Kate Parman made three of four free throws, Curl got a layup, and Malaise went 1-2 at the line in the final minute to win 42-34.

New Glarus coach Kevin Parman said it was very satisfying to get a win over a very pesky Shullsburg team.

“With this young group, we just needed to get over the hump because that was a battle,” Parman said. “I’m proud of the girls for fighting through it and fighting adversity and they did a good job and found a way to get it done at the end.”
