Free throws save Albany; Argyle collects first win

ALBANY — The Comets girls basketball team kept is winning streak alive with a narrow 53-52 victory over Belmont on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Free throws ended up being the difference in the game, as both teams had nine chances at the line. Albany was 6-for-9 at the charity stripe, while Belmont made just two.

The Comets trailed by one in the first half, despite a pair of threes each from Abby Hollis and Alana Durtschi. Gracie Freitag, Myah Johnson and Avary Briggs also scored in the first half. Belmont had six players score.

In the second, Hollis drained another pair of threes, while Freitag converted two 3-point plays. The Comets outscored the Braves 29-27 in the second half for the win.

Hollis, Durtschi and Freitag all finished in double digits, with Hollis’ team-leading 18. Durtschi followed with 15 and Freitag with 13. The Comets made seven shots from beyond the arc — four from Hollis and three from Durtschi.

Belmont had eight different players score. Kennedy Howell led them all with 13 points. The next highest was Tori Nodolf with nine.


ARGYLE 59, NORTH CRAWFORD 52

ARGYLE — The Orioles picked up their first win of the season with a 26-point performance from Jaylin Hartwig.

She scored 14 points in the first half. Paired with Hannah Gierhart’s six points, Argyle put up 23. The Orioles still trailed by two going into the locker room. For North Crawford, Stovey had eight first-half points, six of them coming from the free throw line.

Argyle outscored North Crawford 36-27 in the second half. Hartwig added 12 points to her total, including one from deep. Sarah Helfvogt, Sadie Steiner and Alexis Rosenstiel also had a 3-pointer each. Stovey put up another eight points in the second.

Hartwig had 12 chances at the line and converted half of them in her team-leading 26 points. Gierhart was 5-for-6 at the charity stripe for 13 points. North Crawford had three players in double digits: Stovey (16), Bransky (11) and Olson (10).


BLACK HAWK 45, SHULLSBURG 39

SHULLSBURG — Tara Wellnitz’ double-double lead the Warriors to a conference crossover win on Monday, Nov. 28.

Wellnitz totaled 22 points with 14 rebounds to lead the team. She went 3-for-4 from the free throw line with one 3-pointer. Senior teammate Raylin Peterson also scored in double digits with 10 points. Kendra Haldiman was one of three players with six rebounds, including Hailey Wellnitz and Jaliyah Collins. Haldiman led the team in assists (5) and steals (3).

For Shullsburg, Camden Russell scored 15 points with two 3-pointers. Taylor Russell led with seven rebounds, while Olivia Brown had eight assists.

Black Hawk bested Shullsburg in field goals made (17-14), rebounds (36-24) assists (15-13) and turnovers (17-19).


DARLINGTON 59, RIVER RIDGE 39

DARLINGTON — With a 36-point first half, the Redbirds convincingly defeated River Ridge in their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 29. 

Darlington performed better in nearly every statistical category except for 3-pointers made and second-chance points. The Redbirds were 6-for-8 from the free-throw line, scored 20 points off turnovers, grabbed 35 total rebounds and collected 17 steals.

Kylie Butler led the team with 16 points — six of which came from beyond the arc — and seven steals. Jaidyn Evenstad also drained two 3-pointers in her eight-point total. Jaylyn Schwartz was the second-highest scorer with 14 points and a team-leading five rebounds. 

Mandi Wehrle scored 24 of River Ridge’s 39 points with seven 3-pointers. Shayna Graf, Abby Wehrle and Reghan Zinkle were the only other players to score.


DELEVAN-DARIEN 63, MONROE 53

DELEVAN — The Cheesemakers took a step in the right direction in its road game on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Although the team lost, Taylor Jacobson broke out for 27 points. She shot two from beyond the arc and went 7-for-9 at the free throw line. She sat the last six minutes of the game, though, after collecting her fifth foul.

Sydnee Conway added 12 points with an additional two 3-pointers. Allison Wunschel’s shot from beyond the arc put the Cheesemakers within one in the second half, but Delevan-Darien outrebounded Monroe to secure the win.

A. Stallings put up 23 points for the Comets, while R. Crull and A. Gonzalez each had 14. Of Delevan-Darien’s five 3-pointers, Gonzalez had four of them.
