Five events to be represented by local students-athletes

BANGOR — The Division 3 Boys and Girls Track Sectional took place on Friday, May 30 at Bangor High School. 

In the girls competition, freshman Tatum Doescher of Albany came in 14th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:09.97. In the 800 meter run, junior Adalee Berget of Darlington qualified for the state tournament by finishing in third place and registering a time of 2:18.76. Freshman Emma Thompson of Albany was 10th with a time of 2:33.45. 

The 1,600 meter run had sophomore Brianna Vazquez of Darlington taking sixth place with a time of 5:35.59 while Thompson finished eighth with a time of 5:44.44. Vazquez also competed in the 3,200 meter run and took seventh place, completing the run in 12:08.28. 

The WIAA Track & Field State Championships will take place June 6-7, 2025 at UW-La Crosse.

Boys Shot Put: 

●  Caleb Smith, Sr, Albany

The 100 meter hurdles found sophomore Brooke Wellnitz of Argyle-Pecatonica finish in 13th place, running the race in 17.37 seconds. The girls 300 meter hurdles resulted in a seventh place finish for junior Loretta Tisch who was clocked in 48.11 seconds. 

The 4x100 meter relay is where the Black Hawk Warriors relay team of junior Mya Milz, freshman Makayla Curran, sophomore Maddy Place, and sophomore Emily Curran took ninth place with a time of 52.56 seconds. 

Another Black Hawk relay team, the 4x200 relay team finished in sixth place as Emily Curran, Makayla Curran, Mya Milz, and Maddy Place crossed the finish line in 1:50.37, setting a 20-year-old school record. Darlington’s relay team ended up in 15th place with senior Allie Andrews, junior Catie Hartwig, sophomore Callie Blosch, and sophomore Madison Welacha finished with a time of 1:55.59.

Two area teams competed in the 4x400 meter relay and both finished back-to-back. Argyle-Pecatonica’s team of Brooke Wellnitz, sophomore Aleah Harris, freshman Elise Kuebli, and Loretta Tisch finished 13th in 4:31.37 while Darlington’s team of Welacha, Blosch, junior Clara Solverson, and sophomore Austia Stauffacher was 14th in 4:34.41.

The Darlington Redbirds had the only girls relay team that qualified for the State Tournament as the 4x800 team of Madison Welacha, Brianna Vazquez, Clara Solverson, and Adalee Berget took sixth place with a state-qualifying time of 9:57.06. Also, in the 4x800, Argyle-Pecatonica’s team of sophomore Sophie Howard, junior Mazie Theorin, sophomore Lauren Meunch, and sophomore Avery Webster took 13th place in 11:12.08.

In the field events, in the high jump, junior Kennadee Johnson of Monticello finished tied for 10th place with a high jump of 4 feet, 10 inches. The long jump featured Brooke Wellnitz of Argyle-Pecatonica finishing in 11th place with a long jump of 14 feet, 9.75 inches. Also, Emma Thompson of Albany was 13th with a long jump of 14 feet, 5 inches and freshman Elise Kuebli came in 15th with a long jump of 13 feet, 11.50 inches. The girls triple jump had Brooke Wellnitz of Argyle-Pecatonica take 12th place with a jump of 32 feet, 7 inches. Right behind her was Loretta Tisch of Argyle-Pecatonica with a jump of 31 feet, 7.75 inches, good for 13th place.

The shot put and the discus is where Lillyanna Morales of Albany excels, and she did it again in both events, taking ninth place in the shot put with a toss of 32 feet, 3.50 inches. In the discus, Morales was eighth with a throw of 101 feet. 

Darlington finished in 17th place with 17 points. Black Hawk was 31st with three points. Argyle-Pecatonica and Albany tied for 33rd place with two points.

In the boys competition, freshman Dax Paquin of Black Hawk finished in 15th place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.64 seconds. In the 400 meter dash, senior Isaac Crist was seventh with his time at 52.90 seconds. In the 1,600 meter run senior Ayden Wilkens was an 11th place finisher with a time of 5:02.46. The 3,200 meter run saw junior Kaleb Broughton claim 10th place in 10:56.01.

Senior Danick Haesler of Darlington will be one of three entries from the area to qualify for the state meet as he finished in fourth place in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.80 seconds. Haesler also took 12th place in the 300 meter hurdles in 44.47 while junior Beckett Wachholz of Albany captured seventh place in 43.26.

Two area teams were 14th and 15th in the 4x100 meter relay. Argyle-Pecatonica’s team of sophomore Alex Domini, sophomore Barrett Ferrell, sophomore Bo Stateler, and senior Korvin Ferrell ran the relay in 47.35 seconds and finished 14th while Black Hawk’s team of junior Ty Kobbervig, junior Spencer Hay-Skattum, freshman Dax Paquin, and junior Shane Ward was 15th in 48.95 seconds. Black Hawk took 13th place in the 4x200 meter relay as the Warriors’ Gant Quinn, (a freshman), Paquin, Hay-Skattum, and Ward ran the relay in 1:40.42. Meanwhile, Darlington’s team of senior Aiden Dempsey-Strang, senior Porter Paisley, sophomore Artemio Rico, and junior Kane McDermott ran the race in 1:40.95.

Darlington’s 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Marcus Kendall, Haesler, McDermott, and Crist claimed 8th place in 3:36.45 while Argyle-Pecatonica’s relay team was 13th behind their team of junior Grant Kuberski, senior Garrett Phillipson, junior Eli Harris, and freshman Ayden Slater, who completed the relay in 3:43.75.

Harris, Slater, Kuberski, and Phillipson qualified for the State Tournament as members of the 4x800 meter relay team. They will represent Argyle-Pecatonica after finishing in 4th place with a time of 8:34.18 at the sectional. Finishing in fifth place was the Darlington Redbirds relay team of Kendall, senior Junior Jimenez, junior Brandon Reyes, and Isaac Crist with a time of 8:36.97. 

The high jump featured sophomore Artemio Rico taking sixth place with a high jump of five feet, 10 inches. The long jump meant an eighth-place finish for Monticello senior Alex Roe, who completed a jong jump of 19 feet, 6 inches. Also in the long jump, senior Aiden Dempsey-Strang of Darlington took 13th place with a long jump of 18 feet, 1.5 inches. Thress area athletes placed in the triple jump. Junior Kamron Parker of Albany was 13th with a jump of 38 feet, 10 inches. Alex Roe of Monticello was 14th with a jump of 38 feet, nine inches. Freshman Ayden Slater of Argyle-Pecatonica took 16th place as his triple jump measured 33 feet, 9 inches. Senior Caleb Smith of Argyle became a state qualifier in the shot put as he finished in fourth place with a shot put of 51 feet, .50 inches. Smith also took eighth place in the discus with a throw of 140 feet, one inch. The discus also had sophomore Gage Ruf of Darlington finish in 10th place with a throw of 134 feet, 3 inches. Senior Beau Bredeson of Black Hawk was 12th as his discus throw traveled 132 feet, 10 inches.

Darlington was 20th in the sectional with 13.5 points. Albany was 26th with eight points. Argyle-Pecatonica was 33rd with five points, and Black Hawk was 37th with two points.
