MONROE — The first state rankings of 2020 have come out for basketball, wrestling and hockey, and several area teams and athletes made the lists.
In girls basketball, unbeaten defending WIAA Division 5 state champion Black Hawk is the No. 1 team in the state in both the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and the Associated Press polls. Shullsburg is ranked fourth in the AP poll and seventh in the coaches poll.
New Glarus received one 10th-place vote in the AP poll in Division 4.
In boys basketball, Monroe received six points in the AP poll in Division 2 and is ranked 12th.
In Division 4, Darlington is third in both polls, with conference rival Cuba City No. 1. Belleville received one 10th place vote in the AP poll.
Monticello is fifth in the Division 5 coaches rankings, and seventh according to the AP.
The Rock County Fury are 12th in the Wisconsin girls MYHockey rankings.
Monroe has four wrestlers ranked in Division 2. Alex Witt is ranked second at 182 pounds and Bodie Minder is fifth at 285. Kelsey Dominguez (220) and Jack Dubach (106) received honorable mention rankings.
Darlington-Black Hawk has two wrestlers ranked in Division 2: Leif Bredeson is No. 1 at heavyweight (285) and Cayden Milz is honorable mention at 170.
Brodhead-Juda’s Brian McCullough is 11th at 152 pounds, with teammate Jayson Starr honorable mention at 145 in Division 2. Sugar River’s Joe Quaglia is 11th at 132 pounds.
In Division 3 wrestling, Pecatonica-Argyle’s Noah Krahenbuhl comes in at No. 5 in the 126 weight class. Easton Schraepfer (160) is also fifth.
