MONROE — Alex Hernandez and Austin Fuchs, 2023 Monroe graduates and players under Coach Toby Golembiewski, are organizing the first annual Toby Golembiewski ‘Win the Day’ Memorial Flag Football Tournament 4 p.m. Friday, August 2.

“We wanted to ensure that everyone who had interacted with Coach G in the past and wanted to participate in this event had the chance, so we wanted to get this fundraiser going before our classmates began leaving for college,” the organizers wrote in a press release July 10. “Because of this, however, we were left with a very short period of time to plan and get our intentions out into the community.”

Toby “Coach G” Golembiewski had a major impact on more than just his football players, and the Class of 2023 agreed that to continue the legacy Coach G had left behind. They honored it by creating a scholarship to help a student looking to advance their education who has also had a significant impact on their community. It was decided that all of the money made from the event will go to this senior scholarship.

Out of pure caution, the Class of 2023 does not want to rely solely on the money made from the event and is instead reaching out to local businesses in Monroe and asking for monetary help to establish this scholarship. Businesses and individuals have the option of choosing to be “1st Down” donors and “Touchdown” donors. 1st Down donors consist of businesses or donors that donate $100.

“As a 1st Down donor, we would promote your business on our Instagram and Facebook pages. As a Touchdown donor, we will promote your business on our social media pages while also putting the name of your business on the back of the shirts we intend to give out on the day of the event,” the organizers said.

The money from donors will be placed in a non-profit scholarship bank account.

“Our end goal is to give four $1,000 scholarships to Monroe High School seniors, however, considering we are recently starting this fund we are more than open to any donation amounts,” organizers said.
