MONROE — The East Troy Lady Trojans hit four 3-pointers and built up a double-digit lead in the first half to pave the way to a 61-43 win over the Monroe Cheesemakers in Rock Valley Conference, Valley Division girls basketball on Thursday, Dec. 4.

After trailing 10-2 early, sophomore Brynlee Scace buried a three to get the Cheesemakers to within 10-5. Sophomore Analise Newcomer’s three-point play made the Cheesemaker’s deficit 17-10. The Lady Trojans briefly had a 10-point lead at 22-12 with 6:30 left in the first half. A three by senior Lauryn Quinn and a basket by senior Alexis Gertsch made it 24-17 with 4:50 left until halftime. Gertsch got a layup but East Troy got a three before halftime to take a 36-21 lead at the half.

The Lady Trojans used a 10-3 run over the first six minutes of the second half to take control at 46-24. Senior Sophie Conway’s putback made it 46-26 before Quinn hit a three with 8:10 left to make the score 50-28. Gertsch made a free throw and Braylee Frederich made a putback basket to drop East Troy’s lead to 20 at 56-36. Freshman Elizabeth Veeder made three free throws and junior Holly Carpenter got a basket in the final minutes to make it a 61-43 win for East Troy.

After the game, Cheesemakers coach Patrick Kenny pointed out one of the areas where the Cheesemakers came up short.

“We’ve got to lock down a little bit better on our help-side defense and not give up some lay ups,” said Kenny. He liked his team’s hustle and was encouraged by Monroe’s determination from beginning to end. “We talked about those little things making a big difference. I think this team just needs to learn how they can contribute.”
