DARLINGTON — Senior Broker Buschor, who just week was battling a case of walking pneumonia, scored 11 points during a 19-2 start to help the Darlington Redbirds cruise past the Platteville Hillmen 79-63 in nonconference boys basketball on Monday, Jan. 12.
Buschor finished with 22 points, including four three-pointers, while senior Grady O’Brien racked up 17 points and junior Zeke Zuberbuhler had 13 points for Darlington.
Zuberbuhler scored six straight points and O’Brien drained a corner three in the final minutes of the first half to give Darlington a 48-22 lead over the Hillmen. In the second half, the Redbirds maintained their lead with a field goal by Zuberbuhler, a reverse layup by Buschor, and another layup by senior Cagyn Paisley to grab a 72-50 lead with under five minutes to go.
Darlington coach Tom Uppena liked seeing his team begin the game with a fast start that carried over throughout the game.
“We came out with a lot of juice and energy right away and that was good to see from our guys. We really came out hot. And, it really helped that our guys were making shots, making threes, to get that fast start. And, I thought we did a good job defensively, especially that first half to slow them down and take away what they wanted to do,” Uppena said.
Darlington, ranked No. 8 in the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll for Division 4, improved to 8-2 with the win. The Redbirds, 3-0 in the SWAL Conference, has a conference game scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15 at Boscobel.
Mount Horeb 78, Monroe 67
MOUNT HOREB — The Monroe Cheesemakers had won four of their previous five games before running into the Mount Horeb Vikings on Monday, Jan. 12.
The Vikings had won their three previous games and knocked off the Cheesemakers 78-67.
The Cheesemakers trailed at halftime, 42-30, but Monroe rallied in the second half. With under 10 minutes to go in the game, senior Mekhi Brown made two of three free throws to get the Cheesemakers to within 54-50. Junior Kam Gerber-Reamer scored a basket in the lane with 7:06 left to tie the game at 56-56. The Cheesemakers took the lead at 58-56 on Brown’s steal and layup with 6:53 left in the game.
Mount Horeb called a timeout to regroup. They tied the game at 58-58 and outscored the Cheesemakers 20-9 over the final 6:39.
Brown led the Cheesemakers with 21 points. Senior Logan Taylor pumped in 20 points, and senior Marcus Ott helped the Cheesemakers with 14 points.
Monroe fell to 7-4 overall with the loss. The Cheesemakers (3-1 RVC-Valley) played a Rock Valley conference crossover game scheduled against Edgerton on the road on Thursday, Jan. 15.
Belleville 55, Brodhead 50
BRODHEAD — The Belleville Wildcats made 13 of 26 free throws which helped the Wildcats get a 55-50 victory over the Brodhead Cardinals in nonconference boys basketball on Monday, Jan. 12.
Junior Adam Johnson scored 19 points, senior Hazeon Edmond dropped in 12 points, and senior Cooper Nemec came up with 11 points to lead the Wildcats.
Senior Sam Searls scored 18 points, including four 3-point baskets in the second half to lead Brodhead. The Cardinals made eight three-pointers for the game. Senior Nolan Bump had 14 points for the Cardinals.
Belleville held a 20-19 lead at halftime. In the second half, Brodhead was 0-3 at the free throw line and just 4-9 for the game.
Belleville (2-8, 0-1 Capitol South) snapped a four game losing streak with the win. The Wildcats traveled to Wisconsin Heights for a Capitol South conference game scheduled for Thursday, Jan 15. Brodhead (0-10, 0-5) had a home game scheduled on Thursday, Jan. 15 against East Troy in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game.
Barneveld 74, Black Hawk 43
BARNEVELD — The Black Hawk Warriors scored just 11 points in the first half and eventually lost to the Barneveld Eagles 74-43 in Six Rivers East boys basketball on Monday, Jan. 12.
The Warriors did better in the second half with 32 points, but the Eagles remained hot with a 48 point second half.
Senior Cooper Baumgartner and freshman Kayden Stauffacher each scored 10 points to led the Warriors.
Parkview 81, Black Hawk 30
ORFORDVILLE — Senior Aiden Crane led all scorers with 27 points and senior Oliver Friedrich scored 26 points as the Parkview Vikings routed the Black Hawk Warriors 81-30 in nonconference boys basketball on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
The Vikings stayed in command the whole game by taking a 44-9 halftime lead. For the Vikings, it was their 11th straight win.
Freshman Kayden Stauffacher led the Warriors with eight points. Junior Brody Argall and senior Jacob Woodruff each scored six points for Black Hawk.
The Warriors (2-9, 1-5) hosted Albany in a Six Rivers Conference game on Thursday, Jan. 15.
St. Ambrose 62, Pecatonica 48
MADISON — The Pecatonica Vikings trailed by only four points at halftime, but could not get any closer as they lost to St. Ambrose 62-48 on Tuesday, Jan. 13 in nonconference boys basketball.
It was anybody’s game at halftime with St. Ambrose leading 21-17. But, the Guardians pulled away in the season half.
Junior Griffin Noll was the only player for the Vikings who scored in double figures with 21 points.
Pecatonica (7-4, 3-3 Six Rivers East) had another road game scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15 at Monticello in Six Rivers East Conference action.
Pecatonica 65, Argyle 50
BLANCHARDVILLE — Junior Griffin Noll led all scorers with 26 points while junior Brock Erickson had 12 points and junior Luke Leonard contributed 11 points in Pecatonica’s 65-50 win over the Argyle Orioles in Six Rivers East boys basketball on Monday, Jan. 12.
Argyle was led by senior Deacon Kuebli with 21 points. Sophomores Joe Soper and Mikey Helfvogt each scored 11 points for the Orioles.
The Vikings held a 35-26 lead at halftime, then Noll erupted for 18 of his 26 points in the second half.
Pecatonica (7-3, 3-3) had a nonconference game scheduled against St. Ambrose on Tuesday, Jan. 13 followed by a Six Rivers East conference game on Thursday Jan. 15 at Monticello. Argyle (4-5, 3-3) hosted Barneveld in a Six Rivers East conference game scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15.
In other boys basketball from Monday, Jan. 12, Johnson Creek defeated Monticello 79-31 in a nonconference game, while Juda edged Albany 45-42 in a Six Rivers East contest.
