Dahl sets new Albany mark
Monroe falls; NG, Brodhead, Argyle score big wins

Brianna Dahl became the all-time leading scorer in Albany’s girls basketball history after scoring 16 points in a win over Rio on Jan. 8 at Wisconsin Dells.

ALBANY — The Comets are starting to find their stride as the season reaches its half-way point. Albany defeated Monticello 73-24 on Jan. 6, and two days later knocked off Rio 60-33 at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

In the Rio game, senior Brianna Dahl broke the all-time program scoring record previously held by Amy Golz (1,166). Dahl scored 17 against Monticello, and needing just 11 to set the school mark, scored 16 against Rio. Dahl was set to be honored Jan. 11 prior to the game against Barneveld with Golz in attendance.

In the win over Monticello, Kaiya Zurfluh led all scorers with 18 points, while Alana Durtschi had 12 and Myah Johnson 11. The Comets hit nine 3s in the rout. 

“My team never gave up. They played hard and kept their heads high,” said Lori Brokopp, Monticello coach.

Ellie Gustafson led the Ponies with nine points, and Dalana Trumpy added seven.

Against Rio, Albany led 27-19 at halftime, but outscored their opponent 33-14 in the second half. Zurfluh scored 12 points and Gracie Freitag added 10 for the Comets.


Edgewood 57, Monroe 30

MONROE — The Cheesemakers were outmatched Jan. 7 against rival Madison Edgewood.

Taylor Jacobson led Monroe with 18 points and Sloane Ambrose added seven. Just two other players scored a single basket each for Monroe, which fell behind 41-12 by halftime.

Edgewood had balanced scored throughout its lineup. Taya Fernandez led the Crusaders with 12 points, while Madison Foley and Ally Barth each had nine. Ten different Edgewood players scored.


New Glarus 77, Waterloo 28

NEW GLARUS — Lindsey Schadewalt scored 27 points to lead the Knights in a thrashing over the Pirates Jan. 6.

Alex Atwell added 10 points, and Grace Nommensen and Elle Lancaster each had eight for New Glarus, which jumped out to a commanding 45-16 lead at halftime.

Nine different Knights scored.

New Glarus (9-3, 1-1 Capitol South) is at Wisconsin Heights (3-9, 0-1) Jan. 11 and then hosts Marshall (3-6, 0-1) Jan. 14.


Brodhead 57, Jefferson 30

BRODHEAD — The fourth-ranked Cardinals stayed atop the Rock Valley with a win over the Eagles Jan. 6.

Abbie Dix scored 22 points to lead Brodhead, while Onnikah Oliver had 12 and Kiarra Moe eight.

Brodhead lead 28-15 at halftime, and outscored Jefferson 29-15 in the second half.


Black Hawk 59, Barneveld 39

Prairie du Chien 78, Black Hawk 39

SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors continued its conference losing streak with a win over Barneveld Jan. 6, then lost to Prairie du Chien in a nonconference battle Jan. 8.

In the road win at Barneveld, Tara Wellnitz recorded a double-double for the Warriors with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She also added six assists and four steals. Tatum Baumgartner had 12 points, Raylin Peterson 10 and Maddy Lange nine.

Black Hawk finished the game with 37 rebounds and 16 steals. The Warriors led 23-16 at halftime, but outscored the Eagles 36-23 over the final 18 minutes of play.


Parkview 21, Juda 18

JUDA — The Panthers (4-12) let a 15-11 halftime lead slip away, getting outscored 10-3 in the second half of a low-scoring nonconference game against Orfordville Parkview (5-7) Jan. 7

Jackie Nusbaum led Juda with eight points, including six in the first half. The Panthers scored on just six shots from inside the arc, none from downtown, and were 4-for-6 from the free throw line.

Parkview’s Jenna Olin led all scorers with 10 points. The Vikings were 5-for-15 from the line and made eight baskets in all — zero from deep.


Argyle 58, Pecatonica 52

BLANCHARDVILLE — Grace Ganshert had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds as the Orioles knocked off the Vikings on Jan. 6.

Maggie Godfrey added 18 points and eight boards for Argyle, and Alyssa Stadola chipped in 14 points. Stadola sank four 3s, while Chesney Leigh and Godfrey each hit four 3s themselves.

Lexi Peterson led Pecatonica with 17 points, while Tessa Green and Chloe Schraepfer each scored 11.

Argyle led 27-19 at halftime.
