CUBA CITY — Despite an early score, New Glarus fell to Cuba City 11-1 in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal game on Tuesday, May 30.
The Knights tied the game at one in the top of the second with a two-out RBI single from Zander Hauser. Patrick Alt led off the inning with a single to left, but his pinch runner, Nathan Hendrickson, was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice. An error put runners on first and second, setting up Hauser for the RBI opportunity.
The Cubans regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame with three straight RBI hits. From that point on, Cuba City never looked back. The team scored five more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to enforce the 10-run rule.
Alt led the Knights on the bump and at the plate. The sophomore went 2-for-3 on offense with a double and gave up just one earned run. New Glarus’s defense committed seven errors. The remaining three hits came from Leyton Mihlbauer, Ashlin Mihlbauer and Hauser.
New Glarus concludes its 2023 season with a 12-7 record as the Capitol South Conference champions — its first title since 1997.
