ALBANY — Four people were inaugurated into the Albany High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Dec. 23 during the intermission between the Comets’ boys and girls basketball games against Brodhead.
Brianna Dahl, Denise Doescher, Brandon Bakken and the 1992-93 boys basketball team as a collective.
The ’92-93 boys basketball team cemented themselves as one of the greatest teams in school history thanks to their magical run to the state tournament. It is still the only time in program history an Albany boys team has made it to the state tournament.
The team was coached by Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association hall of famer Mickey Martin, who was assisted by Dan Aeschliman. Players consisted of Tony Brewer, Mark Zurfluh, Chad Sterr, Lonne Hauge, Mike Armitage, Luke Roenneburg, Jeremy Keegan, Ethaan Schultz, Adam Kopp, Eric Starter, Jamie Stephenson and Joe LaPointe.
Dahl was a 2022 graduate and finished her career as the school’s all-time leading scorer in girls basketball with 1,452 points. She also excelled on the volleyball court and softball diamond. Dahl was a two-time all-conference honored player in softball. She earned all-conference honors three times in volleyball. In basketball, Dahl was team MVP and earned all-conference accolades all four years, and was named the Six Rivers East Player of the Year and first-team all-state as a senior. Dahl is currently a student at UW-Whitewater studying Criminology with a minor in Biology.
Doescher enters as both an athlete and as a coach. A 1992 AHS grad, she competed in volleyball, basketball and softball. She earned three varsity letters and was all-conference twice in volleyball. In basketball, she was a two-year letter-winner. In softball, Doescher was a four-time letter-winner, earning all-conference honors twice. She went on to play softball at Edgewood College from 1993-96.
Doescher has also been a coach for two decades. She has been a JV or middle school volleyball coach for the past 20 years, and started coaching the softball team in 1997. She is currently an assistant coach in her 27th year with the program, which includes multiple trips to state and one state championship in 2017.
Bakken, a 1997 AHS graduate, also enters as a player and coach. He competed in cross country, basketball and baseball. He was a three-year letter-winner in cross country, earning all-conference his junior and senior seasons. In basketball, he was a two-year varsity starter and was all-conference as a junior. Bakken was a four-year letter-winner and starter in baseball, earning all-conference honors as a junior and senior.
As an adult, Bakken returned to his alma mater as a coach. He’s coached either varsity or junior varsity for the girls basketball, boys basketball and baseball.
