MONTICELLO — Junior Ty Durtschi delivered 20 points and junior Kamron Parker backed it up with 10 points to help the Albany Comets come away with a 53-23 win over the Monticello Ponies in Six Rivers East conference boys basketball on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
After taking a 29-11 halftime lead, the Comets allowed just five made baskets by the Ponies in the second half. Junior Hunter Grossen led the Ponies in scoring with 10 points.
Both teams had Six Rivers Conference crossover game scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9. Albany (5-2, 3-2) hosted Belmont while Monticello (0-7, 0-4) hosted Benton.
Darlington 65, Mineral Point 53
MINERAL POINT — The Darlington Redbirds lost all three meetings against Mineral Point last season, including a sectional semifinal game against the Pointers on March 13. They also lost two of three games the season before with the one win happening on Dec. 15, 2023.
That skid is now over as the Redbirds rolled over the Pointers 65-53 in SWAL Conference action on Tuesday Jan. 6.
Junior Zeke Zuberbuhler led the Redbirds with 14 points. Senior Grady O’Brien added 12 points and sophomore Ryder Fitzsimons contributed with 11 points. The Redbirds went 15-20 at the free throw line to hold off the Pointers.
Darlington (5-2, 2-0) had a SWAL Conference game scheduled at home against Iowa-Grant on Friday Jan. 9 followed by a non-conference game in the Waunakee Tournament against Turner on Saturday Jan. 10.
Barneveld 66, Pecatonica 54
BLANCHARDVILLE — The Barneveld Eagles used a 39-29 scoring advantage in the second half to knock off the Pecatonica Vikings 66-54 in a Six Rivers East boys basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
A close first half ended with Barneveld holding a 27-25 lead at halftime. In the second half, senior Hunter Larson of Barneveld scored 10 of his 17 points to lead the Eagles. Junior Griffin Noll of Pecatonica led all scorers with 22 points. Senior Cohlman Schlimgen came up with 14 points for the Vikings.
Pecatonica (6-3, 2-3) will host Argyle in Six Rivers East Conference action on Monday, Jan. 12
Lake Mills 85, New Glarus 54
NEW GLARUS — The Lake Mills L-Cats allowed New Glarus to score just 20 points in the second half take an 85-54 win over the Glarner Knights in a Capitol Conference crossover game on Tuesday Jan. 6.
The Glarner Knights trailed by just five points at halftime at 39-34, but the L-Cats tightened up on defense and allowed just 20 points in the second half while connecting on six 3-pointers to run away with it.
Senior Matt Roth scored 19 points and junior Nolan Julseth added 14 points for the Knights.
New Glarus (6-3) played their first Capitol South conference game on Friday Jan. 9 at home against Wisconsin Heights.
Black Hawk 41, Stockton 38
STOCKTON, Ill. — Junior Cole Dunlavey had a double-double to lead the Black Hawk Warriors to a hard-fought 41-38 win over the Stockton Blackhawks in nonconference boys basketball on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Dunlavey scored 15 points and hauled in 12 rebounds to pace the Warriors. Sophomore Grant Quinn had eight rebounds to go along with four assists.
Black Hawk (2-5, 1-3) hosted River Ridge in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game scheduled on Saturday, Jan. 10.
St. Ambrose Academy 55, Brodhead 53
MADISON — The Brodhead Cardinals were looking for their first win of the season against the St. Ambrose Guardians, who had already won seven of their first eight games of the season on Monday, Jan. 5.
The Guardians prevailed over the Cardinals 55-53 in overtime. It was a close game throughout and with St. Ambrose leading 48-45, Brodhead senior Sam Searls hit a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 48-48 with 30 seconds left. The Cardinals’ defense prevented St. Ambrose from getting off a shot in the final seconds of regulation.
Down by three again in overtime, Searls drained a three with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 53-53. Unfortunately, the Cardinals fouled Adam Sturm of the Guardians in the act of shooting a three with 1.6 seconds left and Sturm made two of three free throws to get the win.
St. Ambrose also had an edge at the foul line, shooting 32 free throws to Brodhead’s 12.
Searls scored 14 points and junior Braylon Strehlow also scored 14 points to lead the Cardinals.
Brodhead (0-8, 0-4) hosted Big Foot in Rock Valley Conference-Rock Division action on Friday, Jan. 9.
Lakeside Lutheran 74, Belleville 43
BELLEVILLE — Jackson Scholey scored 19 points for the Wildcats (1-7), but the visiting Warriors (6-1) were the team that came out on top on Jan. 6. Cooper Nemec added seven points.
Belleville was to open Capitol South play at home against Marshall (4-5) on Jan. 9, then travels to Brodhead (0-8) on Jan. 12 for a nonconference game.
