MONROE — The Lady Cheesemakers dropped one spot in the latest Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 2 girls poll, from eighth to ninth. Monroe went 1-1 over the holiday break, losing to Chippewa Falls Dec. 27 before defeating Muskego Dec. 28.
Monroe (8-4) is one of four Badger Conference teams listed in the Division 2 poll. From the Badger North, two-time defending state champion Beaver Dam (10-1) remains No. 1 in the polls and Reedsburg (9-1) moves into 10th. In the Badger South, Monona Grove (11-1) is fifth. Elsewhere in Division 2, New Berlin Eisenhower (11-1), which defeated Monroe in the state semifinal last year, is second.
In the Division 5 poll, Black Hawk (9-0) remains perched in the top spot ahead of Clayton (No. 2, 11-0), River Ridge (No. 3, 10-1), Fall River (No. 4, 8-2) and Argyle (No. 5, 5-1).
On the boys side, Darlington (9-0) moves from fourth to second in the Division 4 poll after upsetting former top-seeded New Glarus (8-1) Dec. 20. The Glarner Knights dropped from No. 1 to No. 3, with Roncalli (10-0) moving from second to first. Mineral Point (5-3) remained third in Division 4.
January is a big month for both Darlington and New Glarus. The Redbirds have big matchups against Southwestern (7-2, Jan. 10), Black Hawk (Jan. 12), Mineral Point (Jan. 18), Platteville (Jan. 22) and Cuba City (6-2, Jan. 24). New Glarus, meanwhile, opens conference play and has nonconference games scheduled against Mineral Point (Jan. 7) and Cuba City (Jan. 21). New Glarus defeated Platteville (7-2, No. 10 in Division 3) back in December.
The first Associated Press polls for boys and girls will be released Jan. 7, while the next WBCA poll will be released Jan. 8.
