Cleary comes up big in HWY 78 rivalry

BLANCHARDVILLE — Senior Madelyn Cleary had an explosive night, as she tallied 22 kills in Pecatonica’s 22-25, 28-26, 26-24, 25-20 victory over Argyle on Sept. 24. 

“Maddy Cleary had an outstanding night with 22 kills paired with Tatum Kurschner with a total of 29 assists on the night,” Pecatonica head coach Melissa Schlimgen said. “We executed in tough situations, making smart offensive moves throughout the match. We were tightly matched with Argyle but were able to push through each set.”

Cleary had 22 of the team’s 35 kills, while Kurschner had 29 of the team’s 30 assists. Kurschner and Loretta Tisch had three aces each. Three Vikings had double-digit digs — Diana Hendrickson (16), Rya Jorenby (13) and Tisch (30).

Kylie Butler and Brooke Wellnitz led the Oriole offense with 33 total kills. Mya McNett fed the two with 28 assists. Four Orioles laid out to keep rallies alive — Wellnitz (20 digs), Butler (19), McNett (17) and Brynn Harris (11).


DARLINGTON 3, RIVERDALE 0

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds hit at a .343 clip and limited their free balls to just eight in a 25-16, 25-9, 25-15 victory over the Chieftains on Sept. 24.

Catie Hartwig and Maddie Gratz chipped in four aces each — eight of the team’s 15 total. Lilly Ritchie led the team offensively with 11 kills, followed by Gratz with 10. Kaycee Wedig had the highest hitting percentage, tallying eight kills in nine attempts with no errors. Allie Andrews distributed the offense with 25 assists.


BRODHEAD 3, BIG FOOT 0

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals swept the Chieftains 25-16, 25-23, 25-14 in a Rock Valley match on Sept. 24. 

Three hitters were key to the offense — Allie Dahl with eight kills, Brynn Reisterer with seven and Makenna Schooff with six. Gretchen Kammerer had 17 of the team’s 27 assists. Serving was yet again a strong suit, as Brodhead tallied 15 aces. Kammerer led them all with five. Addie Leifker (11 digs), Dahl (13) and Schooff (18) led the defense.


CAMBRIDGE 3, NEW GLARUS 0

CAMBRIDGE — Short-handed for the last few Capitol contests, the Knights dropped 25-20, 20-9, 26-24 sets to the Bluejays on Sept. 24.

Ellie Brenkman had three solo blocks. Kalia Malaise dug out 10 attacks followed by Vivian Lancaster with nine.

In other local volleyball, Belleville fell to Marshall 25-18, 26-28, 25-9, 25-20. Barneveld — an honorable mention team in Division 5 — swept Monticello and Black Hawk defeated Juda 3-1.
