MILTON — Once in a while there is a game fans don’t want to see come to an end — one of those instant classics, full of drama in which both teams come up with clutch plays in crunch time.
The Monroe Cheesemakers had one of those games on Tuesday, Feb. 10 as they defeated the Milton Red Hawks 96-94 in overtime in a nonconference game.
The game was close throughout, as Monroe held a 44-42 lead at halftime. But, in the final seconds of regulation, the Cheesemakers trailed 84-81. Senior Logan Taylor hit a turnaround three-pointer with two seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 84-84 and send it into overtime.
In overtime, the Cheesemakers grabbed a 90-84 lead only to see the Red Hawks drain a pair of threes to tie it at 90-90. With under two minutes left in overtime, Monroe went ahead 92-90 but Milton tied it 92-92. With 36 seconds left in overtime, Monroe took a 94-92 lead. Milton got a fast break basket with 25 seconds left to tie the game at 94-94. With five seconds remaining in overtime, senior Marcus Ott made a layup. Both teams were out of timeouts. Milton in-bounded and got off a shot at the buzzer that went in and out, and the Cheesemakers captured a thrilling 96-94 win.
Logan Taylor led the Cheesemakers in scoring with 29 points. Senior Mekhi Brown came up big with 27 points, including four three-pointers. Ott finished with 20 points and junior Kam Gerber-Reamer had 12 points. The Cheesemakers were clutch at the free throw line throughout the game where they went 32-35.
Monroe (14-5, 8-2) hosted Delavan-Darien in a Rock Valley Conference, Valley Division game on Thursday, Feb. 12. They also have a make-up game on Saturday Feb. 14 at Beaver Dam. Monroe is one game behind East Troy with the two teams facing each other on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Lodi 73, New Glarus 66
NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights were stopped by the Lodi Blue Devils 73-66 in a Capitol Conference crossover game on Monday, Feb. 9.
The Glarner Knights trailed by just five points at halftime, 35-30, but just couldn’t come up with a way to get the lead in the second half.
New Glarus had three players score in double figures with junior Nolan Julseth coming up with 28 points, senior Grady Johnson with 13 points, and senior Matt Roth with 12 points. The Knights also struggled from the free throw line where they were just 10-21.
New Glarus is still unbeaten in the Capitol South at 5-0 while falling to 12-6 overall. The Glarner Knights were scheduled to face Waterloo in a Capitol South game on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Waterloo.
Barneveld 83, Pecatonica 69 2OT
BARNEVELD — It’s not often that a team wins by 14 points in overtime, but the Barneveld Eagles did just that by out-scoring the Pecatonica Vikings 14-0 in a second overtime to win 83-69 in a battle of the top two Six Rivers East Conference teams on Monday, Feb. 9.
Barneveld held a 31-30 lead at halftime, but the Vikings sent the game into overtime by edging the Eagles 31-30 with the score at 61-61 at the end of regulation. Both teams scored eight points in the first overtime which called for a second overtime with the score tied at 69-69.
The Eagles blanked the Vikings in the second overtime 14-0 to come up with an 83-69 win.
Junior Griffin Noll led the Vikings with 22 points. Junior Luke Leonard delivered 16 points and senior Cohlman Schlimgen scored 10 points for the Vikings.
Pecatonica slipped to 14-5 overall and 10-4 in the Six Rivers East. The Vikings had a nonconference game scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Southwestern. They face Argyle in a Six Rivers East Conference game on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Southwestern 52, Pecatonica 43
HAZEL GREEN — There were some tired legs on the part of the Pecatonica Vikings as the Southwestern Wildcats downed the Vikings 52-43 on Tuesday Feb. 10. The Vikings were playing one night after an 83-69 loss in double overtime to Barneveld.
Noll ended up with 22 points, but had just one three-pointer and Leonard scored in double figures with 10 points for the Vikings.
Pecatonica fell to 14-6 overall with the loss. The Vikings had a Six Rivers East conference game scheduled on Thursday at Argyle against the Orioles.
Pecatonica 55, Shullsburg 41
BLANCHARDVILLE — The Pecatonica Vikings trio of junior Griffin Noll, junior Luke Leonard, and senior Cohlman Schlimgen was too much for the Shullsburg Miners as Pecatonica won its seventh straight game 55-41 over the Miners in a Six Rivers crossover game on Friday, Feb. 6.
Noll led all scorers with 21 points, Leonard dropped in 17, and Schlimgen added 13 as the Vikings pulled away from a 26-20 halftime lead with 29 second-half points.
Colton Fennell led Shullsburg with 10 points.
Juda 62, Argyle 48
JUDA — The Juda Panthers are closing in on the .500 mark after getting wins over Argyle and Brodhead.
On Monday, Feb. 9, the Panthers turned back the Argyle Orioles 62-48 in a Six Rivers East conference game. Three players scored all but four points for the Panthers in their win over the Orioles. Senior Jayden Brown led Juda with 25 points, followed by senior Braydon Steinmann with 21, and senior Easton Hess with 12.
Senior Deacon Kuebli was the leading scorer for the Orioles with 19 points. Sophomore Joe Soper also had a productive night for Argyle with 15 points.
Argyle (9-10, 7-6 Six Rivers East) hosts Pecatonica in a Six Rivers East clash on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Juda 68, Brodhead 61
JUDA — The Panthers improved to 10-11 on the season after taking a 68-61 win over the Brodhead Cardinals on Tuesday Feb. 10.
Senior Braydon Steinmann connected for 22 points and senior Jayden Brown poured in 21 points for Juda. The Panthers also got 10 points from senior Easton Hess.
The Cardinals got a big game out of senior Sam Searls and junior Dylan Ross. Searls put up 18 points and Ross scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals. Junior Braylon Strehlow had 10 points and three assists.
Juda (10-11, 6-10 Six Rivers East) had a conference game scheduled on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Albany, with its regular season finale slated for Feb. 26 at Barneveld. Brodhead (3-16, 1-9 Rock Valley-Rock) met Edgerton in an RVC-Rock game at home on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Darlington 76, Lancaster 64
LANCASTER — Junior Zeke Zuberbuhler tallied 27 points, senior Broker Buschor had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore Ryder Fitzsimons scored 14 points as the Darlington Redbirds won their 13th game in a row with a 76-64 victory over the Lancaster Flying Arrows in a nonconference game on Tuesday Feb. 10.
It was Darlington’s third win over an SWC team as they have now defeated Dodgeville, Platteville, and Lancaster this season.
The Redbirds (16-2, 10-0) returned to SWAL conference action as they were scheduled to take on the Iowa-Grant Panthers at Livingston on Thursday Feb. 12.
Fennimore 76, Belleville 75 OT
FENNIMORE — Neither team would allow the other any breathing room between the Belleville Wildcats and the Fennimore Golden Eagles in nonconference boys basketball on Monday Feb. 9.
In the end, the difference was one free throw.
Fennimore edged Belleville 76-75 in overtime in a scoring duel between Belleville’s Jackson Scholey and Fennimore’s Jude Kenney. Scholey scored 26 points and Kenney put up 28 points, but both teams matched basket for basket throughout the game.
The game was tied at halftime 35-35 and 66-66 at the end of regulation. Overtime went back and forth until Fennimore took a 75-72 lead. That’s when sophomore Brody Funseth hit a game-tying three-pointer on an assist by Scholey to make it 75-75 with 50 seconds remaining. Fennimore got possession of the ball and worked the clock down for a final shot. The Eagles took a contested shot in the final seconds, but the Wildcats were called for a loose ball foul on the rebound with 2.5 seconds to play. Fennimore made one of two free throws and Scholey’s half-court heave at the buzzer fell short.
In addition to his 26 points, Scholey had 10 assists. Senior Cooper Nemec added 20 points, and senior Hazeon Edmond contributed 12 points for the Wildcats.
Belleville (5-14, 2-4) had Wisconsin Heights on its schedule for a Capitol South conference game at home on Thursday Feb. 12.
River Ridge (Ill.) 50, Black Hawk 41
SOUTH WAYNE — The Black Hawk Warriors trailed throughout the first half, then took a brief lead, but were outscored 11-2 in the final minutes of a 50-41 loss to the River Ridge (Ill.) Wildcats in nonconference boys basketball on Monday, Feb. 9.
The Warriors were down 25-21 at halftime, but got the lead midway through the second half. The game was tied 39-39 before the Wildcats scored 11 of the final 13 points scored in the game.
Sophomore Grant Quinn was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 18 points and handed out eight assists. Junior Cole Dunlavey had 11 points and eight rebounds. The Warriors (5-14) were beset by 22 turnovers.
Highland 66, Black Hawk 42
HIGHLAND — On Tuesday Feb. 10, the Warriors faced off with the Highland Cardinals in a Six Rivers Conference crossover game. The Cardinals led from start to finish and defeated the Warriors 66-42.
The Warriors couldn’t make up for a 41-17 halftime deficit.
Junior Cole Dunlavey had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead Black Hawk. Sophomore Grant Quinn gathered six rebounds and doled out five assists. Black Hawk had 12 assists overall in the game.
Black Hawk (5-15, 4-10 Six Rivers East) played conference leader Barneveld in a game scheduled on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Belmont 69, Black Hawk 25
SOUTH WAYNE — The Belmont Braves improved to 16-2 on the season at the expense of the Black Hawk Warriors with a 69-25 win on Friday, Feb. 6.
The Braves are now ranked fifth in Division 5 in the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports Boys Basketball Media Poll.
Belmont dominated the game from the start and took a 41-11 halftime lead.
Freshman Kayden Stauffacher led the Warriors in scoring with 10 points and sophomore Grant Quinn had four rebounds.
In other boys basketball from Friday Feb. 6, Argyle defeated Highland 73-50 and River Ridge rolled past Monticello 62-33.
