Cheesemakers roll Cougars

CLINTON — The Cheesemakers rolled to a 70-42 win over the Cougars on Feb. 7 thanks to a strong second half where they out-scored their hosts by 21 points.

Mehki Brown led all scorers with 21 points, while Marcus Ott finished with 10. JT Meyer and Peyton Herbst each added eight points. Eleven Monroe players scored in all. Brody Cornfield had nine rebounds and four steals. Brown also had four steals. 

The Cheesemakers were 25 of 50 from two-point range and hit 5 of 14 (35.7%) of three-pointers, while Clinton made just 34% of all of its shots. Monroe out-rebounded the cougars 43-28, scored more transition points (21-4), scored more points in the paint (46-14) and points off turnovers (29-8). 


New Glarus 67, Belleville 60

NEW GLARUS — The Knights picked up a second win in the Highway 69 rivalry this season, eliminating the Wildcats in a closely fought battle Feb. 7.

Luke Burton and Clayton Streiff led New Glarus with 17 points apiece. Nolan Julseth added 14 points for the victors.

Jackson Scholey’s 15 points led Belleville, which received 14 points each from Brendan Pawloski and Adam Cann. 


Brodhead 82, Jefferson 72

JEFFERSON — The Cardinals jumped out to a 50-21 lead at halftime and put it in cruise control in the second half, scoring a strong Rock Valley victory Feb. 7.

Cullen Walker tallied 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Brody Riese had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. Gabe Bockhop had 18 points and Sam Searles 14 for Brodhead. The Cardinals hit 12 of 22 three-pointers.


Highland 73, Albany 38

ALBANY — The Comets struggled in the first half, falling behind by 19 at halftime and didn’t fare much better in the second stanza, as the Cardinals tacked on an extra 16 in the back half.

Highland finished the night with a higher field goal percentage (56.0% to 36.4%), two-point percentage (79.2% to 42.9%), and three-point percentage (34.6% to 25.0%) on more attempts.

The Cardinals out-scored the Comets 16-4 in transition, 28-9 in points off turnovers, 16-4 in second-chance points and had 31 rebounds to Albany’s 21. The Comets also turned it over eight more times than their opponent.

Kaden Zurfluh led the Comets with 14 points, while Ty Durtschi added 13. Tyler Patchen dished out six assists. Highland’s Wes Kraisinger led all players with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Highland’s Kaden Washa hit 4 of 8 three-pointers and tallied 18 points in all.


Cassville 44, Monticello 34

MONTICELLO — The Ponies struggled offensively against the Comets in a Six Rivers East-West showdown Feb. 7. Monticello was held to just 12 points in the opening half and 22 points over the final 18 minutes. The Ponies shot 30.0% from the field, including making just 3 of 16 (18.8%) of three-pointers.

Cassville out-scored Monticello on points off turnovers (20-7).

Alex Roe scored 11 points to lead Monticello, while Drew Freitag added nine points. Tristan Pitman grabbed eight rebounds.


Potosi 68, Pecatonica 42

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings were within seven points of the Chieftains entering the intermission, but were doubled up in the second half, 38-19.

Griffin Noll led Pecatonica with 17 points, while Charles Anderson had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Potosi had four players in double-figures.


River Ridge 91, Juda 43

JUDA — The Panthers were no match for the Wildcats on Feb. 7. River Ridge took a 54-25 advantage into the halftime locker room, and Juda was still out-scored 37-18 in the second half.

River Ridge out-scored Juda 70-14 on points in the paint, including 35-4 on points off turnovers, 32-6 on transition points, and 25-7 in second-chance points. River Ridge also grabbed 44 rebounds to Juda’s 22. The Panthers committed 30 turnovers, which included 25 Wildcat steals.

Jayden Brown led Juda with 14 points, while Easton Hess added nine points thanks to 3-for-5 shooting from downtown. River Ridge had four players in double figures, with Elliott Thorton’s 24 points and 10 rebounds leading the way.


Juda 71, Benton 60

JUDA — The day before the River Ridge beat down, the Panthers scored their third win of the season, besting the Zephyrs in a Six Rivers East-West crossover.

Jayden Brown had the hot hand, finishing the contest with a game-high 30 points while adding nine rebounds. Easton Hess (14 points), Braydon Steinmann (11 points) and Blake Adkins (9 points) were also consistent contributors offensively for Juda. Hess added five steals and five boards, while Adkins tallied six rebounds.

In other area action, Darlington brushed Iowa-Grant aside 80-44 on Feb. 6, Argyle eked out a 73-70 win over Benton Feb. 7, and Shullsburg came out on top of Black Hawk 58-45 on Feb. 7.
