Cheesemakers rattled by Thunder 4-1

MONROE — The Cheesemakers dropped a nonconference game to the Kenosha Thunder 4-1 on Saturday, Dec. 20 at SLICE in Monroe.

The Thunder took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Late in the second, Kenosha scored twice in less than a minute’s time to make it 3-0. 

Less than 90 seconds into the third period, Kenosha made it 4-0. 

Monroe finally made it on the board thanks to a Hans Brandt power play goal with 3:39 left in the game. Owen Hicks and Brody Koehn assisted.

Easton Trifone and Jake Hahn each had two goals for Kenosha.

Brock Brandli took the loss in goal despite a valiant effort. The senior turned away 45 shots and had a save percentage of .918. The Cheesemakers were out-shot 49-18 in the contest.

Monroe’s next game was scheduled for Monday, Dec. 22 at home against Oregon, a makeup from a contest postponed the week prior. After that, Monroe travels to Viroqua on Saturday, Dec. 27, then to Beaver Dam on Tuesday, Dec. 30.


Wis. Valley Union 6, Bluebirds 0

WAUPACA — The Janesville Bluebirds were blanked by Wisconsin Valley Union 6-0 in nonconference girls high school hockey on Saturday, Dec. 20. Wisconsin Valley Union is a co-op program made up of players from Stevens Point, Marshfield, Waupaca, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, and Amherst.

WVA scored three goals in the first period and three more in the third period. The Bluebirds had seven power play opportunities but could not take advantage of any of them. Janesville had only 12 shots on goal.

Micki Andrews and Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe played in the game for the Bluebirds but did not score or collect an assist. 

The Bluebirds (0-8-1) will take on the Viroqua Blackhawks in nonconference girls hockey at the Verona Ice Arena on Saturday, Dec. 27.
