Cheesemakers lose 3-pt battle; Cardinals fall in overtime

MONROE — The Cheesemakers held strong through the first six minutes of the game before the Beavers went on a decisive 16-0 run for an 85-38 Badger Conference win on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Monroe scored the opening points with a basket from Sophia Douglas and reclaimed the lead at 5-3 with a 3-pointer from Allison Wunschel. After going down 9-5, Sydnee Conway got the Cheesemakers back within one with a shot beyond the arc. Sophie Golembiewski tied the game at nine with a free throw. 

Reedsburg then went on a 16-0 run from which they never looked back. The Beavers made 16 3-pointers, with four each from Ruby Olson and Addison Mesiter. Sydney Cherney and Olson led their squad with 28 and 22 points, respectively.

For Monroe, Conway tallied nine points — all from beyond the arc — with six rebounds. Taylor Jacobson and Abbey Matley chipped in seven points each, followed by five from Douglas. Brinley Roidt totaled four points, while Golembiewski and Wunschel scored three each. The Cheesemakers tallied seven 3-pointers.


EVANSVILLE 61, BRODHEAD 57

BRODHEAD — The Blue Devils inch closer to the top of the Rock Valley with their overtime win against the Cardinals on Thursday, Jan. 19. Brodhead (10-5, 8-3) retains third, just one game head of Evansville (9-7, 7-4).

Ava Brandenburg was a thorn in the Cardinals’ side, scoring 26 points. In the first half, she scored 12 of her 14 points in a row. In overtime, she scored five of Evansville’s 14 points, going 3-for-4 from the line. Maria Messling also scored in double figures with 15 points, came at the charity stripe. 

Conversely, Brodhead had three players in double figures, led by Abbie Dix with 16. She and Alecia Dahl (12 points) were the only players to score in overtime. Addison Yates finished with 11 points, including one three. The remaining two baskets from beyond the arc came from Alexis Kammerer (nine points). 


BLACK HAWK 49, PECATONICA 45

SOUTH WAYNE — Chloe Schraepfer did everything in her power for her team to win, but Pecatonica fell short in a critical Six Rivers Conference showdown on Thursday, Jan. 19. The Vikings led 24-22 at halftime, but the Warriors came back to score 27 points in the second half for the win.

Schraepfer scored 27 points — 60% of the team’s offense — with three 3-pointers and a 6-for-8 performance at the free-throw line. The next highest scorer was Diana Hendrickson with eight points split evenly between the two halves.

Raylin Peterson’s double-double led Black Hawk to victory, as she scored 17 points with 10 rebounds. Kendra Haldiman and Veronica Cheatham tallied 10 points each, while Haldiman was perfect from beyond the arc.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, the Warriors hosted Dodgeville, falling 62-54. 


MONTICELLO 54, JUDA 17

JUDA — The Ponies limited the Panthers to just seven points in the first half en route to a Six Rivers East Conference win on Thursday, Jan. 19. Paired with Black Hawk’s win over Pecatonica, Monticello moves into fourth in the conference.

Dalana Trumpy led the Ponies with 16 points, all from inside the arc. Conversely, Molly Olson scored 11 points with nine of them from 3-point range. Jaden Zuber also made two 3-pointers in her eight-point total. Ellie Gustafson was the third player in double figures with 10 points. Despite the win, the Ponies went just 4-for-16 from the free-throw line for 25%.

Lavinia Rufer and Ciarrah Davis tallied six points each to lead the Panthers. They were the only players to score in the first half. In the second, Briliey Swedlund and Rianna Sullivan got in on the scoring with two points each. The final point of offense came on a Marta Escalero free throw.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, Monticello hosted Cambria-Friesland. The Ponies continued winning ways with a 67-33 victory.


JOHNSON CREEK 66, ARGYLE 44

JOHNSON CREEK — The Orioles outscored the Blue Jays 27-22 in the second half but were unable to overcome a 28-point first-half deficit on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Jaylin Hartwig scored a team-leading 13 points, going 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. Sadie Steiner was the next highest scorer with eight points, followed by Lexi Wonders with seven. Hannah Gierhart tallied six points, while Mya McNett put up four — all from the free-throw line. Brinley Meinert and Sara Helfvogt each drained a 3-pointer.


CUBA CITY 53, DARLINGTON 43

CUBA CITY — The Redbirds played the No. 3-ranked Cubans tough — tying the game twice and taking a lead in the second half — but fell in a SWAL Conference matchup on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Darlington trailed by just one at halftime but managed to take a 21-19 lead in the second half. Cuba City then went on an 8-0 run from which the Redbirds couldn’t recover. The difference came in second-chance points, as the Cubans grabbed 19 offensive boards to score 13 points.

Kylie Butler led the squad with 12 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc. Maddie Gratz also scored in double figures with 10 points. Jaidyn Evenstad accounted for the remaining two 3-pointers in her six-point total. On the glass, Cayla Golackson grabbed nine rebounds.


ALBANY 49, BARNEVELD 25

BARNEVELD — The Comets improved upon their first game with the Eagles — where they won by just three at 53-50 — for a conference sweep of Barneveld on Thursday, Jan. 19. 

The Eagles scored just nine points in the first half, while the Comets put up 21. Albany limited leading scorer Iz Durst to eight points, when she entered the game averaging almost 12 points per game.

Once again, Albany received all its points from four players — this time Alana Durtschi (18 points), Abby Hollis (15 points), Gracie Freitag (14 points) and Anna Ellinger (two points). Durtschi and Hollis accounted for all five of the Comets’ 3-pointers, while Freitag went 4-for-6 at the free-throw line.
