MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers could not pull themselves out of a 4-0 disadvantage and lost to the Madison West Regents 4-2 in nonconference boys hockey on Saturday, Dec. 6.
The Regents scored three goals in the second period with one coming on a power play. The Cheesemakers began the third period down 3-0 and fell behind 4-0 just 23 seconds into the third period when the Regents got another power play goal.
The Cheesemakers came to life in the latter part of the third period when senior Tysen Folgate scored a goal with an assist from junior Beau Janecke to make it 4-1. Moments later, senior Hans Brandt scored a power play goal with assists by senior Brady Stuart and senior Brody Goode to pull the Cheesemakers to within 4-2. That would be all he scoring for Monroe as the Cheesemakers were unable to close the gap any further.
Sophomore Brogan Hoelscher started in the net for the Cheesemakers and had 30 saves. Monroe had 28 shots on goal while Benji Osmond of Madison West had 26 saves.
Monroe (0-3) was set to host Edgewood (1-0) in Badger Conference action on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Girls Hockey
Baraboo Lightning 3, Janesville Bluebirds 2, OT
BARABOO — Freshman Micki Andrews of Monroe got an assist, but the Janesville Bluebirds lost to the Badger Lightning 3-2 in overtime in Badger Conference girls hockey on Thursday Dec. 4 at Baraboo.
The Bluebirds were trailing 1-0 in the first period when Andrews set up Macy Murphy on a power play goal at 16:29 to tie the game at 1-1. The Badger Lightning scored on a power play just 42 seconds into the 2nd period to take a 2-1 lead over the Bluebirds. Murphy got the equalizer at 5:08 in the third period to make the score 2-2.
The Badger Lightning won it 3-2 at 1:48 in overtime on a power play goal. The Bluebirds were assessed a penalty for having too many players on the ice and Andrews was charged with the penalty.
Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe and Julianna Strommen of Brodhead also had playing time for the Bluebirds.
Janesville (0-5) played at Sun Prairie against the Cap City Cougars on Monday Dec. 8.
