MONROE — The Cheesemakers picked up its second win of the season with a 9-0 blowout Oct. 19 at Honey Creek Park.

Luis Torres had four goals for Monroe, which took a 5-0 lead into halftime.

“A shutout game with consistent attacking results,” Monroe coach Matt Bodeau said. “First goal was scored just over 1 minute into the game, and the final point was scored with 20 seconds left on the clock. Great team work to close down Prairie du Chien’s attacking transitions in the midfield.”

Torres scored the first two goals of the game for the Cheesemakers in the opening nine minutes, including the first one just 64 seconds in.

Brian Guzman scored unassisted at the 29:59-mark to make it 3-0. Torres added his hat trick goal moments later, and Luis Munoz-Garcia made it 5-0 before the intermission. In the second half, Alessandra Chagoya, Parker Nall, Sebastian Watkins and Torres all scored.

“Dynamic off the ball movement in the attacking half. Great through balls to lead attackers into space. Solid pressure at the goal mouth by multiple players converted several loose balls,” Bodeau said. “Our communication as a team was a high point for me personally. Marks were well directed, runs were accompanied by specific requests, and every long ball over our field players was immediately called out to our keeper by several players.”

Assisting on goals were Drew Rikkers, Carson Buholzer, Samuel Tinoco, Ben Sanft, Watkins and Munoz-Garcia.

“Significantly, six players contributed goals, and six players provided assists. This balance is a testament to how cohesively the team worked together to earn this result,” Bodeau said.

Monroe’s regional semifinal game, which was set for Oct. 21, was set to be played against No. 1 seed Evansville, which went 14-1-4 in the regular season. The winner will play for the regional championship against either Edgerton or Dodgeville-Mineral Point.

Sugar River had a first-round bye and will host 14th-seeded Mauston, which knocked off 19-seed Jefferson 4-2 in the playoff opener.
