MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers gave up an early goal to Baraboo/Portage but recovered in the second and third periods to take a 4-2 win over the Thunderbirds in Badger Conference boys hockey on Thursday, Jan. 22.
The Thunderbirds scored a goal two minutes into the game and held a 1-0 lead through one period. But, Monroe came back strong with three goals in the second period and another goal in the third period all by four different skaters.
Sophomore Gibson Daly got the first goal for Monroe at 16:03 in the second period with an assist by senior Brody Goode to tie the game 1-1. Goode put Monroe ahead 2-1 with a goal at 12:21 in the second period, assisted by senior Brady Stuart and junior Beau Janecke. Senior Tysen Folgate extended Monroe’s lead to 3-1 just 21 seconds later with a goal assisted by senior Hans Brandt.
The third period stated out well for the Cheesemakers with a goal from freshman Lane Schilt, assisted by senior Owen Hicks at 13:29 for a 4-1 advantage. Baraboo/Portage got a power play goal at 2:29 to make the final 4-2.
Senior Brock Brandli did a great job in goal for the Cheesemakers with 41 saves. With the win, the Cheesemakers improved to 4-5 in the Badger Conference and 6-11 overall. Monroe was to play host to undefeated Edgewood in a Badger Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Janesville 3, Cap City Cougars 0
JANESVILLE — For the second straight game, Micki Andrews of Monroe scored a goal, leading the Janesville Bluebirds to a 3-0 win over the Cap City Cougars in Badger Conference girls hockey.
The Bluebirds took a 1-0 lead in the first period at 7:08 on a goal by Macy Murphy. Then, with one minute to go in the first period, Andrews scored a goal to give the Bluebirds a 2-0 lead. For Andrews, it was her fourth goal of the season. She also has three assists, giving her seven points this season.
The Bluebirds extended the lead to 3-0 on a goal by Emma Peck at 4:12 in the second period. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe and Juliana Strommen of Brodhead got some playing time on the ice. For the Bluebirds, it was their first shutout this season.
Janesville Bluebirds 1, Coulee Region Cyclones 1
WEST SALEM — After 46 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Janesville Bluebirds and the Coulee Region Cyclones finally got the puck into the net. But, it still didn’t decide a winner. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime at the Panther Den in West Salem on Saturday, Jan. 24 in nonconference girls hockey.
There was no scoring in the first and second periods. The Bluebirds broke the scoreless tie on Ava Kligora’s goal at 5:44 in the third period to take a 1-0 lead. The Cyclones got a game-tying goal at 8:09 in the third period to make it 1-1.
The game went into overtime and the teams skated for eight minutes and failed to score. In the second overtime, the Bluebirds did have a power play opportunity on a Coulee Region penalty, but failed to score. The game ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
Micki Andrews of Monroe did not get a goal or an assist. She did pick up a two-minute minor penalty in the second period for cross-checking. Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe and Juliana Strommen of Brodhead got in some playing time in the 67-minute marathon. The Bluebirds got 48 shots on goal and were 0-6 on the power play.
Janesville (5-10-2, 3-4) traveled for a Badger Conference scheduled game against the Viroqua Blackhawks on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
