Jefferson Slips By Monroe 2-0
In a battle for first place in the RVC-Valley, the Jefferson Eagles out-dueled the Monroe Cheesemakers 2-0 on April 29 at Jefferson. Monroe starting pitcher Kaegann Paulson was outstanding, but Jefferson’s Ashlyn Enke was even better as she made a 2-0 first inning lead hold up. The Eagles got their two runs on one hit. Enke helped herself by getting Jefferson’s only hit and drove in a run. For the Cheesemakers, Paulson allowed no earned runs as she walked three and struck out nine. Paulson got two of the Cheesemakers’ four hits. Senior Sophie Golembiewski got a double and senior Olivia Feller got the only other hits for the Cheesemakers. Jefferson improved to 7-1 in the RVC-Rock Division and are ranked No. 1 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Coaches Association poll while the Cheesemakers dropped a half-game back at 6-1. They are ranked No. 3 in the poll. Overall, the Cheesemakers are 13-5. The two teams were scheduled to face each other again on May 1 at Twining Park in Monroe.
Wildcats Win Wild One Over Redbirds 15-13
The Belleville Wildcats and Darlington Redbirds hooked up in a slugfest April 29 with the Wildcats hanging on for a 15-13 nonconference win at Belleville. Sophomore Brynn Prochaska went 3x3 with a home run and drove in five runs to lead Belleville. The big blow was a 10-run third inning for the Wildcats which led Belleville to take a 15-2 lead at the end of four innings. But the Redbirds battled back with 11 unanswered runs over the next three innings. Sophomore Raynie Norgard was 3x4 with a double and three RBIs. What hurt the Redbirds most was 16 walks issued to the Wildcats. Sophomore Korynn Potter scored three runs for Belleville. Likewise, senior Ella Winslow scored three runs for Darlington. Belleville improved to 2-8 overall with the win. They were scheduled to play at Cambridge in a Capitol South Conference game on May 1. Darlington drops to 2-12 overall with the loss. Darlington was slated to host Iowa-Grant in SWAL conference action May 1.
Mineral Point Dominates Over Darlington 15-0
Mineral Point pitcher Tenleigh Bockhop twirled a one-hit shutout in beating the Darlington Redbirds 15-0 in five innings in SWAL conference softball April 28 at Mineral Point. The Redbirds got just two runners on base. Junior starting pitcher Sydney Wiegel got the Redbirds’ only hit and senior Maddy Corely got on with a walk. The Pointers took command with a seven-run first inning. The Redbirds dropped to 1-6 in the SWAL with the loss, and 1-11 overall.
Brodhead Picks Up Two Wins In Softball
The Brodhead Cardinals, ranked No. 8 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Division 2 poll, picked up two more wins by defeating Dodgeville in a non-conference game, and winning over Evansville in a Rock Valley conference, Rock Division game this past week.
On April 28, freshman shortstop Mady Henning collected three hits and an RBI and junior third baseman Leah Rear had two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run as the Cardinals rolled past Dodgeville 6-1. Centerfielder Natalie Pierce had a double and scored two runs while pitcher Ava Risum scattered three hits and struck out 10. Brodhead also benefited from five errors committed by the Dodgers.
On April 29, Risum dominated in the pitching circle as she fired a one-hit shutout, leading the Cardinals to a 6-0 win over Evansville in a Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division game. Risum walked none and struck out 17. She also contributed at the plate with two hits and two runs scored. Rear went 4x4 with three doubles and three RBIs for Brodhead.
By winning two games this week, the Cardinals are 6-2 in the RVC-Rock Division and 9-2 overall. The Cardinals were scheduled to host Turner on May 1 and travel to East Troy on May 2.
Argyle-Black Hawk Handed Two Losses In Softball
Junior Kylie Butler homered, doubled, and drove in three runs, but it wasn’t enough as the Belmont Braves defeated the Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles 6-4 in Six Rivers Conference softball on April 28 at Belmont. The Orioles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Braves answered back with six runs over the first four innings. Claire Holmes got a hit and an RBI for the Orioles. Starting pitcher Mya McNett allowed just two earned runs as the Orioles committed five errors. Belmont, ranked No. 2 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Association poll, improved to 9-1 in conference and 12-1 overall.
On April 29, Juda-Albany got by the Orioles 4-2. Brianna Wilhelmson, Maddy Lange, Sam Kammes, and Butler were the only players to get a hit for the Orioles with Lange driving in the only runs of the game for Argyle-Black Hawk. For Jubany, Ryleigh Brown and Emerson Briggs each got a hit and scored a run. Mya McNett started for Argyle-Black Hawk and allowed four runs, but no earned runs as the Orioles committed three errors. Briggs pitched all seven innings for the Panthers and gave up just one earned run with seven strikeouts. Argyle-Black Hawk fell to 2-9 in the Six Rivers and 6-10 overall. Juda-Albany is now 5-5 in the conference and 8-6 overall. Argyle-Black Hawk was scheduled to play at Benton-Shullsburg on May 1 while Juda-Albany was set to host Highland in a doubleheader the same day.
