MADISON — One game after reclaiming a spot at the top of the Badger South Conference standings, the Cheesemakers were dropped back down a peg. Monroe lost to Madison Edgewood 64-51 Feb. 18.
Carson Leuzinger led Monroe with 14 points, while teammate JT Seagreaves finished with 11. Cade Meyer added 10 and Caleb Bunker finished with six points.
Edgewood was led in scoring by Michael Regnier (18). Isandro Jimenez added 14 and Wallace Schmotzer chipped in nine points.
Monroe trailed 29-24 at halftime and were outscored 35-27 in the second half.
Up next for the Cheesemakers is a 6 p.m. nonconference bout at Freeport Feb. 22. Also on Feb. 22, Monroe will find out its seed in the WIAA Division 2 sectionals, which will start the last week in February.
The Cheesemakers close out their regular season slate with a pair of conference tilts. Monroe will travel to Watertown Feb. 24, and three days later Milton comes to down for the regular season finale.
Brodhead 78, Whitewater 75
WHITEWATER — Cade Walker, Connor Green and Owen Leifker each hit three 3-pointers as the Cardinals came roaring back from a double-digit halftime deficit to knock off the Whippets Feb. 18.
Brodhead trailed 46-35 at halftime but went on to outscore Whitewater 43-29 in the second half.
Leifker finished with 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting, which included a 3 for 4 mark from deep. Green had 15 points and Walker 11, while Cody Malcook added 17, scoring many of his points in the paint.
Jake Martin was one of four Whippets in double figures, finishing the contest with 19 points.
Whitewater out-rebounded Brodhead 31-20, but the Cardinals finished the night 10 for 19 from downtown. Both teams combined to attempt just 13 free throws, with Brodhead hitting 4 of 5 and Whitewater 5 of 8. The Whippets committed 23 turnovers.
Darlington 77, Shullsburg 53
DARLINGTON — Cayden Rankin and Ross Stauffacher had double-doubles as the fourth-ranked Redbirds picked up a nonconference win over the Miners Feb. 18.
Rankin scored 13 points and hauled in 12 rebounds for Darlington, while Stauffacher led the team with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Carter Lancaster nearly had a double-double, finishing with 16 points and nine boards. Curtis Stone finished with eight points and nine rebounds, while Michael Riley chipped in with 10 points.
Darlington, which led 38-20 at halftime, collected 49 rebounds in the contest and had eight steals and 20 assists as a team.
The Redbirds (19-1, 11-1 SWAL) have just two contests left on the regular season schedule — a Feb. 21 home game against No. 1-ranked Cuba City (19-0, 12-0) and a Feb. 27 tilt at Mineral Point (10-9, 8-4). If Darlington wins both games, the Redbirds will have clinched at least a share of the league title.
In other area action, Argyle defeated Iowa-Grant 32-29 Feb. 18.
