MONROE — The Cheesemakers celebrated its yearly tradition of hosting Senior Night in the Performing Arts Center. With the spotlight on the battle for the Rock Valley-Valley title between Monroe and Whitewater, it was the hosts that walked off the stage to applause. Monroe dominated up and down the lineup, winning 58-15. In face, the Cheesemakers dropped just two of the wrestled matches, and forfeited at 106 pounds.
Monroe led 6-3 after the first two matches thanks to a forfeit, then the night was ready for some classic drama. In the 126-pound match, Waylon Anderson faced a tough draw and trailed Ruben Pu Chi 15-4 in the second period. Anderson was not only able to avoid what was gearing up to be at lead tech fall — if not a major decision loss — he flipped the script (and Pu Chi) entirely, scoring a pinfall at 4:39 that stunned the entire Whippets roster that was watching the match from stage left.
Whitewater wrestlers were unable to match Monroe’s intensity for much of the rest of the night. In the ensuing match, Carson Menehan (132) dominated to a 17-1 tech fall, followed by Weston Huntsman’s 11-0 major decision at 138 pounds.
The momentum continued for the Cheesemakers, as Garrett Minder (144) pinned his man early in the second period. Connor Eckdhal (150) then held off Traysen Thomason 4-3. At 157, Braedyn Nally wasted little time on the mat, pinning Max Babcock in 52 seconds.
Joe Rufenacht (165) kept Monroe’s mojo flowing with a physical 11-2 major decision win over Avi Kalra. Kabian Ramos (175), Patrick Harms (190) and Joah Wellman (215) scored back-to-back-to-back pins.
At 285, trailing 58-3, Whitewater finally scored a win as Junior Soto pinned Connor Swindle. Monroe forfeited the 106-pound match. The only other loss for the Cheesemakers was the first match of the night at 120, where Monroe’s Owen Voegeli, ranked fourth in D2 at 113 pounds, bumped up to face Jarvis Porcaro, ranked seventh at 120. Porcaro won by an 8-2 decision.
Two days after the dual, Monroe’s male grapplers traveled to DeForest, while the girls rolled north to Wausau.
Next weekend Monroe hosts its annual invitational. The following week is the conference tournament, and regionals after that.
“We only have four events left,” Monroe head coach Tom Witt said. “In terms of total matches, we consider Bi-State the halfway point in the season.”
