Mount Horeb Puts An End To Monroe’s Season
MOUNT HOREB — The Monroe Cheesemakers’ three-game winning streak ended with the start of the baseball postseason as the Mount Horeb Vikings stopped Monroe 10-3 in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal on Thursday, May 29.
The Vikings (No. 7 seed) got out to a 10-1 lead in the first five innings. Five errors on the Cheesemakers (No. 10 seed) made things tough for pitchers Marcus Ott and Ian Berg, who allowed four earned runs on eight hits.
SS Ashton Hale and catcher Logan Meier both had two hits and an RBI for the Cheese. Junior Owen Hicks hit a double and scored a run for Monroe.
The Cheesemakers (13-9) finished the season tied with Delavan-Darien for second place in the Rock Valley Conference’s Valley Division with a record of 5-3.
Brodhead-Juda knocked out by Delavan-Darien
BRODHEAD — The Cardinals saw their season come to an end against Rock Valley foe Delavan-Darien. Brodhead-Juda lost in the WIAA Division 2 playoff opener 10-1 on May 29.
The Comets scored four runs in the first inning, then added two more in the fourth and four more for insurance in the seventh.
Brodhead-Juda’s lone run came in the bottom of the second inning. Brooks Malkow drove in Chase Bauman.
Brody Riese took the loss on the mount, allowing nine hits, three walks and six runs (five earned) in just three innings of work. Sam Searls came on in relief and was clean through three innings before allowing four more runs in the seventh. The two Cardinals combined to strike out seven batters.
Delavan-Darien pitcher Joel Janssen went the distance, striking out 10 while giving up five hits and two walks.
New Glarus Wins Regional Quarterfinal Over Darlington 10-0
NEW GLARUS — Sophomore Nolan Julseth went 2x4 with an RBI and a run scored and senior Patrick Alt fired a three-hit shutout to lead the New Glarus Glarner Knights (No. 4 seed) over the Darlington Redbirds (No. 13 seed) 10-0 in six innings in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal.
The Knights scored four runs in the first inning, then five more in the fifth inning. New Glarus added a run in the sixth inning that brought the game to a close via the 10-run mercy rule.
New Glarus junior Braden Rear went 3x3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. CF Matthew Roth went 2x3 with a walk, an RBI, and scored a run for New Glarus (15-7).
Darlington got base hits from sophomores Zeke Zuberbuhler, Dante Glendenning, and Landon Edgerton. Sophomore Calum Crist and Glendenning combined to strike out five batters for Darlington, which finishes their season 6-16.
For New Glarus, Alt pitched all six innings, walked one, and struck out eight.
The Glarner Knights host Mineral Point in a regional semifinal on Tuesday June 3.
Belleville no-hit by PDC
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — Belleville starting pitcher Niles Monroe kept his team in the game against Prairie du Chien in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 baseball playoffs on May 29. In the end, however, PDC’s Bryce Lenzendorf had the slightly better stat line, leading to a 3-1 final score.
Monroe allowed just three hits and one walk in six innings, striking out seven. The three runs against him — all in the first inning — were unearned. Meanwhile, Lenzendord tossed a complete game, striking out eight, walking one and allowing zero hits by Wildcat batters. Belleville’s lone run came via the legs of Marcus Hebgen in the fifth inning.
Belleville finished the game with four errors. PDC had just one.
Pecatonica Crushes Williams Bay In Regional Quarterfinal
BLANCHARDVILLE — The Pecatonica Vikings (No. 5 seed) started their baseball postseason with a blowout win over Williams Bay (No. 12 seed) 21-1 in five innings on Thursday, May 29 in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal.
Every player in the lineup scored for the Vikings as Pecatonica pounded out 15 hits and improved to 13-12 overall. Sophomore Griffin Noll, senior Charles Anderson, and sophomore Marty Anderson all drove in three runs apiece. Pecatonica scored five runs in the first inning, six runs in the second inning, and 10 runs in the third inning to run away with the win.
Senior Drew Hendrickson pitched the first three innings for the Vikings and gave up one run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
With the win, Pecatonica advanced to the regional semifinal at Palmyra-Eagle (No. 4) seed on Tuesday, June 3.
In other Division 4 playoff action, 11-seed Argyle Black Hawk was mercy-ruled 13-3 in five innings by 6-seed Southwestern on May 29.
Monticello-Albany Wins Regional Quarterfinal
SHULLSBURG — The Monticello-Albany Space Stallions have advanced to the regional semifinals in baseball after downing Shullsburg-Benton 7-5 in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal on Thursday, May 29.
Center fielder Hunter Gross went 2x3 and drove in two runs while designated hitter Cody Pryce went 1x4 with an RBI and a run scored. Right fielder Drew Freitag was 1x2 with a double, two walks and scored three runs for the Space Stallions, who improved to 5-20 overall.
Junior Tyler Patchen pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Space Stallions (No. 9 seed) face Johnson Creek (No. 1 seed) in the Division 4 regional semifinal on Tuesday, June 3.
